The magic of modern dairy industry makes it possible to shrink five quarts of fluid milk into one quart of dried milk. Add water and dried milk powder becomes fluid again. Dried milk is in great demand for export to friendly nations abroad. It takes little space in the holds of ships, stays sweet without refrigeration, and can be used as a sub stitute for fresh milk for children. The U. S. Department of Agricul ture has placed dried milk high on the list of “ defense foods” whose increased production is sought during 1941 and ’42/ 1 This Saturday night, October 25, will be "booster night’ ’ at the Bor- ing-I)amascus grange. T O THE Shortsite of farm labor is the only serious obstacle in the way of Ore gon meeting its goals in the food for defense program in the opinion of county USD A agricultural defense boards which have held meetings in all o f Oregon’ s 26 counties. Members of the state board who participated in the lit! county meet ings report that, almost without ex ception, the county boards believed the desired increases in certain stra tegic crops can be met if enough la bor is available to do the work. In numerous instances the county group was willing to set its goal at a higher figure than suggested for that par. ticular region. Compilation of the county goals is now being made and will, when totaled, constitute the fi nal and officials state goals for 1942. Those who attended the county meetings were practically unanimous in expressing belief in the impor tance o f this agricultural defense ef fort. As soon as the county meetings were completed a series o f training meetings were started for those who will also discuss the campaign before them to underwrite the increased pro duetion sought. Meanwhile community educational meetings wall be held to acquaint more o f the people with the program and county defense hoard members wil lalso discuss the campaign before grange, Farmers union and other es tablished rural groups. The farm to farm canvass for the signing up of each grower will start in some coun ties the last week in October and in others late in November. The state commttee has been in contact with the representatives of the state employment service in lay ing plans to handle the expected la bor shortage in the best possible man. ner for next year. Closely related to this is the effort to have farmers put all machinery in repair this win ter so that existing equipment can handle the maximum amount o f work in next year’s harvest. Maximum uso of existing machinery will make less acute the prospective shortage in new mechineny. Our econ omy prices make frequent cleaning easy.
