Ora. sight o f the basic character o f the event which as in previous years is to bring about a greater appreciation o f music and to spread more widely its enjoyment among the general pulq lie. This year the Music Week slogan will be "M ake Good Music, Familiar Music.’’ Music is the one common language thru which we can best express and best advance our common aspirations and promote the spirit o f unity. No one would deny that there arc many conflicting interests even am ong the nation o f this rapidly shrink, ing world which are amicably dispos ed, or that there is need fo r us all to use our best e ffo r t « to adjust oui differences. The problem is greater and the solution more urgent when ar at present some nations are frankly belligerent and resort to force. The means they present has naturally ab> sorbed our utterance fo r we must be prepared to meet force with force. But the end is disaster fo r all. The only permanent hoep o f civilization human progress and the enrichment o f life lies in the opposite direction. And it is in this constructive promis, ing, opposite direction we must look also. Should we not give a larger percen tage o f our thot to the exploration o f our common interests and to ways and means fo r furthering these? Such a program has much to recom mend it and nothing could be even us the slightest degree detrimental. It must appeal espicially to all o f us in this hemisphere at this time fo r com, mon interests whether or not we are conscious o f them. W e should earnest ly seek out these interests and to gether advance them so they may con, tribute in the fullest measure to our national and individual lives. Joint participation iin cultural enjoyment is an inviting avenue o f approach and music is the most friendly means o f inter-communication. As inter- American Music week surely has much to recommend it should meet with widespread favor and may w el’ prove a stimulus to a cooperative spirit in other fields. MRS.
