CL ACKAM AS Y; OIJNTY NEWS VOLUME XXXV ESTACADA, OREGON Junior Play April 4th TH REE MY ACT HEART" COM EDY “ CROSS PRESENTED BY JUNIOR CLASS The junior class of Estacada union high school will present the play, “ Cross My Heart,” on April 4, at 8 p. m.( in the hijrh school auditorium. The play is a comedy in three acts. The opening situation is briefly as follows: Jerome Ross played by Wil bur Breese a wealthy Chicogoan buys a bank at Medford. He and Myrtle his wife, played by Patricia Duus have tired of the big city life, more over they believe the environment o f a small community may be exactly what Elinor their sixteen year old daughter acted by Mildred Kiggins needs to snap her out o f the self- consciousness and indifference to male society. As for Jim, Elinor's older brother played by Ray Rickey no such concern need be felt. Dave Adams, played by Harold Lo, veil long employed in the bank which Ross has purchased envisions a much, needed promotion. So does Charlie Westover acted by Bob Brown anoth er cashier in the bank. A promotion would enable Charlie to marry Pau line, Dave’s’ elder daughter played by Shirley Tucker, if the Adams fam ily will curtail their demands upon his good humoied generosity long en ough for Charlie to have a little time to allow the romantic side of his na ture to show once in a while. What with being a carpenter, plumber and household adviser generally Charlie i, time is heavily scheduled. Bess, Duve’3 efficient wife played by Doris Lankins is certain that on« of the surest ways to bring about her husband’s advancement under the new bank management is to court the favor of the Rosses, to see that the whole family is pleasantly and speed ily introduced to the right people in Medford. Her chief worry is Bob, seventeen played by Don Duoglas, to whom girls are poison. His indif- feresce carries him to the place where he wears disreputable looking clathea. shuns mixed groups on any and all occasions and is fast becoming the Adam’s Number one woiry. The blow comes when the family tries to make it clear to Bob that he is under obli gation to show Elinor Ross around when she comes to town even take her to a dance. His rebellion is sudder and sincere. Thus the story thru the first act, How the Adams family finally goi Bob to take Elinor out and the trou ble that Bob and Elinor put theii parents thru in order to embarrass them as they were embarrassed bj their parents should furnish an au dience with a delightful evening’s en tertainment. John Stormer, Eva Jean Bush, Bet ty Jean Somer and Dorothy Yocui act in the play as friends o f Bol Adams. GLOVER PLANTING JAPANESE CHESTNUTS Homer Glover o f Eaglo Creek is planting on his farm some Japanese chestnuts as an experiment in animal feeding. Chestnuts are used in many foreign countries as animal feed where Americans will use corn. The Japanese chestnuts are very heavy bearers and heavy producers said to produce a ton or two to the acre when in production. They also are late bloomers so that frost seldom injures the crop. When the nuts fall animals will harvest the crop them selves if allowed to do so. Cows, pigs chickens and turkeys feed upon the nuts. . W O RK STARTS ON REA LINES Work started this week on digging holes, setting poles and stringing win for the new Northeast Clackamas el ectric cooperative, Inc., lines. There are only 30 men now on the job whereas there should be at least ninety or a hun dred. The WPA men who are on the job are doing good work and there is no fault to be found with them. How ever with such a small number of men on the job Estacada’s new water system cannot possibly be completed in less than two or three years. Statistics show that there ha3 beeq a drop o f 35 percent in W PA work ers over the state and the fear is ex pressed that it is going to be a d if ficult proposition to get sufficient men to complete the North Fork wa ter system anywhere near scheduled time. G ETS UN D ER W A Y A T ZIG ZA G Active training for sheet metal work under sponsorship o f the Ore gon National defense committee was started this week by 17 CCC enrollees at Camp Zigzag. Over $1500 worth of equipment has been placed in a spe cially constructed building by the Van eouver Bairacks district to train the enrollees who have been selected from the entire district on a basis of their special quulificat. ins for the instruc tion. Arthur Peteis o f Portland has been selected'by the defense committee as instructor for the group. Although the class has been but newly organiz ed Peters reports the enrollees are taking to their work wall enthusiasm and show considerable interest in lear ning each point thoroly. Preliminaiy instruction has consis ted of acquainting the youths with the large stock of equipment purchas ed for the shop and enrolees have been getting acquainted with such terms as “ cornice brake,” “ bar fold ing folding machine,” "crimping and beading machine,” and the various types of shears and mallets used by the trade. Cooperation as one of the most important traits to be possessed by a shop worker has been stressed by Peters since the ODening o f the school. In a talk to his group on thq opening night o f the couise, Peters said that they would not only be taught the mechanical functions but he would attempt to impress them with the necessity for doing the tasks they had learned to do carefully. Many men are working today hi told the enrollees because they could do the few things they had learned as they were told to do them and in cooperation with their employers and fellow workers.
