LEGISLATOR’S EXPENSES
A Portland newspaper says that it will be nothing
more or less than a steal from the taxpayers of the state
if the legislators pass a bill that would allow the members
sufficient funds to pay their expenses at Salem. They are
paid $3 per day for forty days, and afterward, nothing.
It’s a serious proposition for a state like Oregon to have
to employ $3-a-day men to make its laws. Of course, it
would be easy to find plenty of men who would willingly
serve in this capacity without pay, but The News does not
believe they would give satisfaction. Legislators should
at least receive a wage equal to that of the common la
borer, whether or not they are worth it.
