POULTRYMEN SIGN NEW CONTRACTS The Pacific Cooperative Poultry Producers will con tinue to operate, as more than enough hens have been signed up to make the new contract effective January 1, says the Eggsaminer. On December 20 more than 80 per cent of the present membership have signed the new contract and in addi tion many poultrymen who never were affiliated with the organization are signing. The indication is that the association will have more hens under contract this year than last and is testimony to the poultrymen’s appreciation of the fact that the only chance they have to survive is by acting collectively in marketing the commodity they produce, in other words, co-operating in the disposition of their product, adds the Eggsaminer. Co-operative marketing has worked to good advant age for the poultrymen, and, handled in a similar manner by those producing other food commodities, should work also to their advantage. The producer should have some thing to say about the price he receives for his goods. A system of marketing that will give the producer this priv ilege will be of benefit to both the public and the seller. -------- oOo--------- First State Bank i $ HEMSTITCHING 6 and 8 cents per yard § ¡ § Mail ELW O O D , Dec. 25.— (S p e c ia l).— T he P. G iv e n P ro m p t A ttention. Mrs. The News doubts the wisdom of the taxpayers at the budget meeting last week when they voted against an item of .$50,000 in the budget for a new' courthouse. The present building is crowded, in fact it is inadequate at present. It is only a matter of a short time until a new building will be imperative. All realize what Clackamas county and the state of Oregon is up against on the road building proposition. Toledo’ — ................................. • • - - Bondèd indebtedness is not pleasant, to say the least. Why wait until wre must have a new' county building be fore making provisions for it, and then have to resort to ^üh another bond issue? The COUnty Commissioners have the last Say in the making of the budget, and that body is composed of men who are capable and will look at the proposition from a business standpoint, and for the best interest of all the taxpayers. While there has been some complaining about bus iness conditions in Estacada during the past year, at least) two firms have increased their volume considerably over that of 1927. The People’s Store, on December 1, had passed the total for all of 1927, every month this year show ing an increase over the same period the year be fore. On December 20, the total sales of the store had passed the total for the entire month of December, 1927, according to H. B. Snyder, proprietor. An increase for the month over the same period last year, Mr. Snyder predicted, would reach at least 33 1-3 per cent. The increase for the entire year will go 15 per cent, he estimated. The Model Supply company of Es tacada, also has increased its volume this year over last i by a substantial margin, according to Harry A. LaBarre, the manager. -------- oOo-------- ECONOMIC CONDITIONS GOOD By Isaac B. Newton, Chairman of the Board and Federal Reserve Agent, Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. Economic conditions in the Twelfth Federal Reserve district during the closing months of 1928 have reflected those developments which characterized the year as a whole. Industry has been active and during the second half of the year labor has been more fully employed than a year ago. Sales of goods at wholesale and retail have been large both in volume and value. Agricultural out put has increased but prices of agricultural products have tended downward during the market season. Prices of non-agricultural commodities have averaged above the prices of last year. A substantial amount of credit has been available at but slightly higher interest rates than prevailed during 1927. Crop estimates indicate that, in the aggregate, pro duction of field, grain and fruit crops during 1928 was larger than during 1927. During the current marketin, season, prices paid for these crops have not compare SLICES TO THE LOAF An ideal slice-size for toasting, sandwiches and children’s between meal snacks.
