Using this as an index, Eastern Clackamas county has never been more prosperous than at the present time. The deposits of the Clackamas County Bank, Sandy, the Estacada State Bank of Estacada, and the First State Bank at Gresham, the latter being in Multnomah county but serving a large section of this county, are the greatest in the history of each institution. In each bank a largo part of the deposits are savings accounts, to which a large precentage of the increase is due. A bank must loan money in order to make money for its stockholders. Its first purpose is to supply the local demand, and then if it still has funds to loan, it invests in government, municipal, or corporation bonds of unques tionable value.
