There is a season of the year observed by Christianity, of short duration, to be sure, when all our thoughts and acts are in marked contrast to what they are at all other times, and go to show the underlying, basic principles inert in every human heart. In one short week out of the fifty- two the spirit of charity, of giving thought to the other and the less fortunate arises in our consci ence and we feel the presence of that mind that was in tiie Man who delivered the Sermon on the Mount, in the other days comprising the year we become so engrossed in wordly affairs, in the maci pursuit after material things, that all our better and purer thoughts and impulses are smothered and lost sight of. Crime flourishes, we forget that we are all common brothers of one, great family springing from the same Fatherhood and bound by ties of sacred consanguinity. Yet we go about our several ways unmindful of these facts and plod and crowd our way through a beautiful world mindful only of our own desires, and more often sacrificing our souls by leading a life of selfish disregard of the other. In contrast to this we have the spirit shown at that time we call Christmas, a holiday of sacred import primarily marking the time of the birth of a Saviour and tne beginning of a higher civilization. In spite of ail the wickedness filling men s hearts during the year we find a dif ferent spirit filling them, and in the most humble home, in the palatial mansion, in the palace and prison, in all the haunts of vice and among the vi cious, the true heart of humanity expresses itself in many deeds of kindness, in gifts, in thoughtful ness of the poor, the sick, the halt and the blind. That all this is true is not to be wondered at, for tnus were we created in the beginning, and only through false belief's and misunderstanding have we gone astray. The wonder is that we cannot at all times, day in and day out, year in and year out, keep the same thoughts in our mind that fill it at Cnnstmas time, ana let the same love and the same spirit direct all our actions. The seed is within us, why not cultivate and so nurture it that it shall bring forth its harvest of happiness, of ’’Peace on eartn, good will to all men?” io be accounted worthy of displaying such a spirit as expressed in the above lines, in the hope and desire to snow a Kindly tolerance to all man kind, tne Editor and tnose connected with him in its publication, wish to extend to one and ail read ers of the Eastern Clackamas News a Merry, Merry wnristmas.
