THURSDAY, NOV. 5, 1025. PARENTAL L A X IT Y Tf any evidence was w anting or any more convincing of the criminal : lhik on the p a rt of parents to re a r j their children in a proper m anner, the recent occasion of Hallowe’en furnished such an abundance of it 't h a t it is im possible to overlook it | w ithout mention. M others of little girls from 5 to 10 years of age w ere j so'neglectful of th e ir dirty th a t they j allowed Hiem to prowl the streets ; •i until L4e hours and mingle with the - crowd of older ones engaged in all , sort* of depredations wherein the rights of others were totally ignor- j e.l, to listen to every sort of vile ..-language, to witness many lawless ! .,^ct com mitted by older ones, and ,in u general w ay,see and hear many .things th a t their te n d er years should .¡deny them. Boys, also, through the fa u lt of both parents, sally forth bent upon ull sorts of deviltry th a t ..youth can think of, and if they are * home and in bed by m idnight their • parents do not know of it and seem- . .¡ugly care. These, with those of . pgos ranging all through the teens, . constitute a mob th a t is a disgrace to. the bringing up of any youngster , and a sad example of the household j thut turns them out. No one would deuy to youth all the pleasure they can get out of life, but why once a year they are allowed to have un bridled license to commit all sorts of acts th a t would shame a H ottentot and cause a coolie Chinaman to think they were the offspring of the lowest Ravages is beyond the power of im agination of those people who are , made to suffer by w hat is no fau lt of the youngster. If they were properly directed by their parents, and indulged only in harm less , pranks, no word of censure would be heard, hut when they w antonly de stroy property, defuce buildings, com mit m any other acts th a t would on any other occasion huil the p ar ents into court to answ er fo r them, iWe say it is tim e to call a halt and lay the blame fo r the condition whore it belongs— upon the parent and nrguo the crim inal responsibil ity be laid to them. Much at the present tim e is being said about the cause of crim e and the tendency on the p art of the young to follow afte r things of low degroe. Is it nny won der, is it a t all surprising, th a t they go wrong when the parents give no heed, us on this occasion, to what th eir hoys and girls do, how much of a nuisance they are to others, and swim along in n "d o n ’t care n d— ” Attitude until their children have to he taken in charge to answ er to the law? The fountainhead of ull rig h t doing is in the home. If it is polluted by crim inal negligence there, God help the innocent child. wc will h a v e a n A t H om e D ay very to o n th e r e a f te r .
