OREGON NOTES OF The best way to celebrate Hal lowe'en is not to roam around re moving gates or other portable property, but to meet at some friend’s house, play Hallowee’ n games, and tell ghost stories of a harrowing description. In Scotland this evening is cel ebrated with enthusiasm, and Scottish castles and halls are the Beenes of ghostly tales innumer able. Among these the most weird, is that of the secret room in Glamis castle, the seat of the Earl of Strathmore. The recent marriage of the second son of King George to the daughter of the present earl, recalled atten tion to the mystery. This is generally supposed to be a room in the most ancient part of the castle, the location of which is known only to three persons, the earl, his eldest son on attaining his majority, and the factor of the estate. The secret has been inviolately kept, not even to their wives, has any of them divulged it. Of course there are stories cur rent as to its nature, among these the most striking is that of a for mer earl who was notorious for his vices, especially for his craze OF A L L KINDS for gambling. He would play at any time and with anyfcone. SEE It happened once that on a dark and stormy Sunday in No vember, this earl called for cards. In Scotland where Sunday is a strict sabbath, this naturally caused much consternation. Long did they play until at Iasi the old butler ventured to peep through the key help, but no sooner had he done so, when he fell back and rolled on the floor with a veil of agony. The door was immediately opened, and the earl came out furious threatening Open from 7 a. m. to 6 p. m. Saturday*, open to 8 p. m. to slay any one who passed. Nor does this include the turnover in production each year. T Seldom, if ever do livestock communities feel the pinch of price or production adversity, as do one-crop or one-stock producing sec tions. Balanced production, like balanced rations, equalize the good elements and counteract the bad. Naturally, there is no place more interested in well developed and well sustained agricultural property than the Estacada State Bank, and wherever we can give encout agement to and assistance in bettering or balancing production we are ready and willing. The center ’ round which livestock development is taking place in the West is the Pacific International Livestock Exposition in Portland, which this year will be held November 3 to 10. This has become the largest show of its kind in America, gathering together the principal breeders and more than 3800 head of pureb red dairy and beef cattle, sheep, hogs goats and horses; also 2500 chickens and rabbits.
