and Ed Chapman went to Wash-

with Mrs. Douglass’ folks. Mr.
Douglass returned the next day
while his wife and Mr. Chapman
remained for a longer visit.
Mrs. C. H. Ilorsman of Cen-
tralia, Wash., was the guest of
her sister Mrs. K. B. Gibson a
few days, leaving on Monday for
Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Douglass
and Miss Florice, Mrs. C. H.
Horsman and Mrs. K. B. Gibson
attended Chautauqua at Glad­
stone Sunday.

and sons Gordon, Thomas and

There must be an interesting
inside story as to why Oregon
was selected at this time for the
attempt of the Scottish Rite
branch of the Masonic fraternity
to initiate a compulsory school
attendance law. It is impossible
to believe that the movement
had its entire inception and au­
thorization locally. If not, has
Oregon’s reputation as a good
field for politician experimenta­
tion and its receptiveness and
responsiveness to new tenden­
cies been responsible for its se­
lection? Or is the movement to
be explained by the fact that
Oregon is reported to have be­
come a thoroughly factionalized
state along religious lines? Ore­
gon Voter.
