AMERICAN P R E S S ASSO C IATIO N Thursday. June 23, 1921 The Portland School Election Portland had an exciting elec tion last Saturday for school di rectors. There were two tickets, one put forth by the federation of patriotic societies, and one, the citizens’ ticket, which was endorsed and supported by all the principal Portland papers. The former ticket won out by 2 to 1. There was an exceptional ly large vote cast, of over 22,000 ballots, showing the interest that had been anused. There are rumors of inside politics in con nection, which would make very interesting rea ling, if made pub lic, Hut a measure which was badly needed, the 3 mills tax for new buildings, was overwhelm ingly defeated. This affords a sign which others may well heed, and that is. the limit of taxation has been reached, and the peo ple will not vote an increase of taxes, no matter how important the object. Portland will be compelled to rigidly retrench, and we are told on reliable au thority, that the same is being done with other schools all over the western states. Street Paving Charles Kitching and 11. L. Jones received the contract for doing the street paving, and be gan work on it this week with a a crew t f men. The crossing at 2nd street and Broadway is to he paved the full width of Broad way, hut from there to the depot 16 feet wide, the sides to be tilled with gravel, with the exception of the frontage of the People’s Store, which will be paved. The paving is of cement and 6 inches thick. Charles Kitching. Mon day afternoon, while liossing pro ceedings was hit on the head by the handle of the scraper, due to the team-suddenly starting up. He received a gash on the fore head which bled considerably, but fortunately did not put him out of commission. When the paving is completed, it will add much to the appearnee of the street looking from the dejiot. 1:30 to 2:00—Ke.-xirts of committees anil election of officers. 2:00 to 2:30—Address by Rev. G.
