August 2fi. 1920 W hat a Mail Order Business Reveals In the .Inly number of the American magazine, there is an article by the president of the Sears, Roebuck & C o m p a n y , which gives a most interesting insight into the sociological con ditions of the country. This firm has about six million customers, three-fourths o f w h o m a r e women, but these buy not for themselves alone but for their families. The data which the writer gives, are derived from a study of the firm’s business, so they are especially reliable. The main conclusion at which he has arrived, is that “The American standard of living is the highest in the world. The American people have the best taste of any people in the world. And America has the greatest buying power of any nation on the globe. We Americans eat better food, wear better clothes, live in m ore attractive homes and have more com fort s, conveniences and luxuries than anybody else on Cod's earth. ” This is highly encouraging in these days of discontent and gen eral complaint. The three main factors in edu cating people to a higher stand ard anil better taste, he finds are motors, movies and magazines, the last chiefly through their ad vertisements. He finds that “as a whole this great country is so up-to-date that there is amazingly little con trast between what is sold in d i tT e rent sect ions, “ and “ that every stratum of the American people is becoming better edu cated and living under better conditions. “ A sociological condition of great value, he was able to prophesy last winter, w h i c h was that the birthrate of 1920 would he almost double that of 1919. This he deduced from the significant fact that their sales of ascertain kind of corset were 75 jiercent more in January and February of mmr ‘»p m 1920 than they were in the same months of 1919. As a refutation of the claim, that family ties a r e growing weaker, and that fathers and mothers are less devoted to their children than they used to be, he states that the babies and chil dren's departments of his firm tell a different story. According to these, “ there is just as much joy and pride in American homes over the coming of children, and even more of a determination to give these little folks a proper start in life than there ever was.” Mothers are dressing their chil dren more sensibly .and attrac tively, and buying a higher class of goods than ever before. While on the one hand, they order party dresses of silk chiffon trimmed with sil k ribbon and lace, thou sands and thousands of little bloomers and rompers and over alls are sold to rich and poor alike. This he takes as an indica tion that mothers want babies and children to play in comfort unhampered by t h e i r clothes either physically or mentally. Much more interesting infor mation is given concerning chang ing tastes in groceries, clothing furniture, etc. Altogether the article is a study of great socio logical value. THE U N I V E R S A L CA R As an example of the ruthless ness of the British government, a meeting of fi.OOOJInsh was held in Trafalgar square, London, recently, at which the govern ment was roundly denounced and the British empire consigned to the hottest place in the universe. This is not sur prising and is an aftqpnath of the war. when the public was fed up on thrills. The campaign leaders of both parties will have to work hard to wake up any en thusiasm. We can imagine after election how one of the losing side recalling a faint memory of his classical studies at school, will sarcastically remark "Par- turierunt montes, nascitur ridic- ulus m us." with emphasis on the last two words.
