The Literary Digest is under
taking- a straw vote of the entire
country. Cards are being mailed
to 11,000,000 voters to ascertain
for whom they voted at the last
presidential election and their
first and second choices for the
coming one. All that will be ne
cessary will be to place a mark
against the names on the card
and then drop it in the mail box.
As each can» will be stamped,
there will be no expense attached
to the voter. In this way the
Digest hopes to procure a very
accurate estimate of the trend of
public opinion, which will go far
towards determining the presi
dential nominations. The enter
prise is most ambitious and the
expense will be enormous, as the
postage alone will amount to
$ 220 , 000 .

The strike as a method of in
timidation, is proving a boome
rang to the railroad unions in
that the rank and file are taking
the hit between their teeth and
bolting. Having sown the wind
the union officials stand to reap a
cyclone, w’hich will add to the
high cost of living for the
general public.

Even with the added support
provided by the higher educa
tional relief bill, the Oregon Ag
ricultural College would be
spending $70 less per student
per year than the Agricultural
Colleges of Michigan, Iowa. In
diana, Kansas aud Washington,
taken as examples. This esti
mate is based on the present at
tendance at O. A. C. without
allowance for increase although
attendance has increased 148 per
cent in the last 7 years, while in
come from the state in the same
period has increased less than 4
per cent. The State University
is equally low in its expenditures
in comparison with other state
institutions.
Pomona granges in Lincoln,
Polk and Multnomah counties
have endorsed the relief bill for
higher education, which w ill ap
pear on the ballot on May 2l as
the Higher Educational Tax Act.
The Eastern Oregon Cattle Feed
ers’ Convention, the Oregon
Dairy Council, and various other
groups of farmers and -stockmen
have endorsed the bill. Endorse
ments are beginning to be an
nounced from American Legion
Posts. The president of the
State Federation of Labor has is
sued a letter to all labor unions,
urging endorsement. Thsee ap- ’
ptovals, together with fhe rrum-
erous ones from chambers of
commerce, civic bodies, and
women’s clubs, show the wide
spread interest in preserving the
freedom and equality of higher
education.

It seems there is some doubt
whether the educational tax bills
will carry in tins county, at least
som • of ttieir warm supporters
are a little dubious. It is to be
hoped that tneir tears will prove
unwarranted. However Clacka
mas county seemingly has a repu
tation lor extreme conservatism
in the matter of voting for ap
propriations. 1 bis trait may be
prudent but it is not a.way.-, wase.
As the sage king said: “ tnere is
that scaliereth and yet mcreas-
eth; and there is that withhold-
eth more than is meet, but it
tendeth to poverty. ” In no case
is this more true than in educa
tion. "A little learning isadan-
gerous thing," and unless an ed
ucational institution is prepared
to impart a thorough education,
it will do more harm than good,
it is just as important tor schools
to have adequate and proper
equipment, as it is for an expert
workman to have proper tools in
order to do good work. That he
may under stress put forth good
work w ith poor tools, is no argu
ment for not providing him with
belter if possible. Si) with our
state colleges and schools unless
they are suitably maintained, it
would i>e wiser economy to close
them entirely.

trust on the state and the obliga
tion for its fulfillment rests on
the tax payers as far as the ne
cessary financial provision is con
cerned. One thing is certain,
that unless they receive prompt
and adequate relief the brightest
and most ambitious of our rising
generations, will leave the state
to seek elsewhere, the education
necessary for equipping them
selves for their future careers.
In these days only those who are
competently trained, can hope to
qualify as the standard of effic
iency is continually rising and
becoming more exacting owing
to the demands of the times.
