1 Devoted to the Interests of Eastern Clackamas County V olume 13, N umber 26 LATH GO. STARTS WORK THIS WEEK The^Estacadft Lath' Co. under I. C. Pitman manager, expect to have their mill in operation this week. At first they will run on ly one shift, but later will put on two, running from 20 to 24 hours a day. This will give employ ment to a number of men, which means a substantial increase to Estacada’s payroll. As the mem bers of the new firm have moved here with their families from outside,-the city population has thereby also been increased. This makes an auspicious begin ning for spring, and if more peo ple keep coming-in and filling up the vacant houses and other buildings, we need not worry over the coming elections. Cheering Prospects A gentleman by the name of Kelly, from Portland, was here this week looking over the can nery building which is owned by W. F. Cary. It is his intention to rent the building and put it in operation provided the out look for fruit is favorable enough. Another p r o m i s i n g sign of increased commercial life, is that a number of business men are seriously discussing ways and means for the estab lishment of a shingle mill. It is to be earnestly hoped that both these ventures will become ac complished facts and then Esta- cada will hum more pronounced ly than ever. ASK BURLESON A Bissell subscriber asks why if a man gets the N ews in N e braska every Monday morning, half the time at Bissell which is only eight miles from Estacada, it does not arrive till Monday evening? We shall have to refer this problem to the postmaster general, as it is beyond us. An increasing number of peo ple are coming to the conclusion that the best way to reduce the cost of living is to increase pro duction by decreasing loafing on the job.
