Concern ing its purpose, he says: “The sole purpose of the cen sus is to secure general statisti cal information regarding the population and resources of the country and replies are required from individuals only to permit the compilation of such general statistics. No person can he harmed in any way by furnish ing the information required. The Census has nothing to do with taxation, with military or jury service, with the compul sion of school attendance, with the regulation of immigration or with the enforcement of any na tional, state or local law or or dinance. There need he no fear that any disclosure will be made regarding any individual person or his affairs. For the due pro tection of the rights and inter ests of the persons fu’-nishing in formation every employee ot the CeriE.ua Bureau is prohibited, un der heavy penalty, from discus sing any information which may thus come to his knowledge.” Seeing that the tluee principal European governments are will ing to accept the treaty reserva tions, a compromise should he speedily effected between the contending factions and t lie treaty ratified. It would be most unfortunate to have it made a party campaign issue next year. Swat the White Plague But a few days remain in which Christmas Seals may he bought in the great nation-wide effort to stamp out tuberculosis and build up the health of the nation. Indications from all parts of the state are that the seal sale sixm to close is the most successful in the history of the Oregon Tuberculosis Association. Ninety per cent of the money re sulting from the sale of the little Christmas stickers will be u*ed to lessen the m* nace of tubercu losis in Oregon of which there are at all times 6000 open cases, including O il tuberculous soldi* rs and rejected men. STORMJJOTTINGS Even the oldest inhabitant ad mits this was the worst ever. Frozen pipes, calls for the plumber or amateur attempts at thawing out pipes have been the order ot the day. Instead of being in the temper ate we were in the frigid zone. Tha school children had no kick about the weather, it suited them well enough. School closed until after New Year. The services at the Methodist church were abandoned Sunday, on account of the cold. The Sunday School was heid however. We were among the unfortu nate ones who had their potatoes frozen. 10 below zero was reported by J. C. Jubb Friday morning. The variations in the tempera ture throughout the state varied from 57 below to 16 above zero. In some places the thermome ters burst when the mercury fell so low they could not record it. Although there have been a number of sleighs around, we have not heard the merry jingle of sleigh hells. Santa Claus was expected to come in an aero-plane this year. But the information reaches us that he will use his old sleigh and trusty rein deer once more. John Shank’s mare and pack delivery were the general modes of conveyance during the storm. The garage and auto truck men are enjoying an enforced vacation, A Portland paper reports that an Oregon City lady lost a hun dred quarts of canned peaches hv the freeze. The fish in the ponds at the hatchery at River Mill, were let loose in the river during the cold spell to save them from freezing. Vernie Duns, who now lives in Pendleton, reported last week that his automobile had been stolen, but he found it again Wednesday, It had been taken across Central ferry into Wash ington and was seen at Dayton and Freewater, and later it was seen headed for Colfax. Sheriff Yates of Whitman County finally found it about 18 miles from Col fax. on the Snake river. The machine was stuck in a snow drift and had been abandoned by the thief, who got away, but Sheriff Taylor thought he would be able to get him on account of the deep snow. The machine was a red hug and therefore easily traced. It had to be left in a barn on account of the snow being too deep to bring it hack.
