S ubscription R ates One year Six months . - . . - $1.50 - .75 Thursday, July 31, 1919 Community Cooperation Last February a Farmers’ Week was held at Cornell Uni versity, N. Y., at which the opening address was giveu by the Dean of the New York State College of Agriculture, A. R. Mann. The subject was “So cial Responsibilities of the Rural Communitiy.” A copy has just been received and read with pro found interest and appreciation. We give here some extracts which have a bearing on the Community Commercial Club just organized for this vicinity, and are in a iine with what we have been trying to inculcate. “There is in every community a vast impulse for personal and community development which is allowed to evaporate because of the lack cf an organized means of existence.” « The above thus states most clearly tlx' purpose and meaning of an organization like the East ern Clackamas Community Club. Again: “When 1 was in South Carolina a few years ago attend ing the National Corn Exposi tion, 1 saw a lot of Indians wearing large badges with the words, ‘Rock Hill is a Good Town,’ ‘Rock Hill is a Good Town.’ That idea of pride in one’s own town, one’s own farm and community is a great nation al asset. If we could all say, wherever we are, we shall help to make this a good town, or a good farming community, and then go to work with a keen sense of our public responsibility, the business of making commu nities would soon be well under way. It is our common task. Fellow-service is the highest ser vice. The sociologists tell us that we are gradually passing out of the conflict and competi tive stage of life into the coop erative. The spirit of working togethe** is upon us. It is funda mental. We live not in spite of one another but because of one another. The duty of each of us to promote the common wel fare, to discharge our obligation . to the community, is as real and unchanging as the fact of life . itself.” Thursday, July 31, 1919 e EASTERN CLACKAM ao NEWS The Ford Libel Suit We have been offered free plate matter containing the rec ord of Henry Ford’s libel suit against the Chicago Tribune. But we cannot see any good will be served by accepting the offer. Mr. Ford might better have ig nored what was said of him by the paper, remembering it was expressed during the heat of the war, when men thought keenly and expressed themselves strong ly. It will soon be all forgotten, even his attempt “to get the boys out of the trenches by Christmas.” We commend to Mr. Ford the old maxim, “let the cobbler stick to his last.” Let him stick to manufacturing Fords, Fordsons and trucks and not meddle with libel suits un less they may prove good adver tising agencies. RED CROSS APPEAL Mrs. J. F. Lovelace has been requested by the Red Cross shop at Portland, to make an appeal for old papers, magazines and clothing.
