Up to that time there was no such thing as an "individual record.” \ flock record was all that any poul- trymun possessed. Yet, notwith standing the merits of the trap nest, there are two classes of people who condemn their use. The llrst class are those who know nothing of their merits, or their possibilities; and the second class object to them on ac count of labor and expense involved in their use. Hut the trap nest stands upon its own merits. No amount of adverse criticism will lessen its value to the poultryman who wishes to build up a heavy laying strain— a task which can lie accomplished only by tile use of this type of nest. Success in the poultry business lies along the line of individual improve ment. breeding only from the best layers is the only way to Intlld up a good laying strain. And there is no certain wav to identify the heavy producers except by the use of the trap nest. The various "systems” now in use to aid one in picking the best layers hv external appearance and various "signs" are far better than no system at all. Any intelli gent selection w hich tends to cull out tiie low producer and to pick the good layer is better than no selec tion; hut at best these systems are, after all. only theories and to dem onstrate whether they are accurate or not. recourse must be had to the trap nest. \ud so the trap nest stands today without a rival in iden tifying the heavy producer, and Is the only certain means by which a heavv laying strain can be produced. Silent testimony of the value of trap-nesting is furnished by the com mercial poultrymen who do not trap nest. Tltese breeders, or at least the more progressive ones, use males only from trap-nested hens purchased from poultry farms where trap-nest ing is conducted. The trap nest not only points out the heavy layer, but it tells the kind of egg a lieu lays; whether it be un dersized or too large; whether the shell is off color or not; whether it is a good type of egg to use for incuba tion. Added to these tilings, it en ables one to pedigree the chicks with certainty, for the eggs that a high producing lien lays can be placed un der one hen, and when the chicks hatch they can be toe punched, which will forever identify them as the pro geny of a certain lien. And when .these same chickens are put into a trap-nest house in the fall, the pre potency of their dam and her value as a breeding bird can be determined. Another important feature of trap nesting is that tt enables one to us1* male birds from high producing hens. No male bird who is from i hen which lias laid less than 200 eggs in her pullet year should ever he ad mitted to the breeding pen. The egg laying ability is transmitted through the male line, hence it is imperative that the cock or cockerel who heads a breeding peti should be the son of a high producing hen. Neglect of this important matter will lead to ulti mate failure, so far as building up a heavy laying strain is concerned. While some poultrymen will resort to almost any expedient to avoid the use of the trap nest, yet, there is only one suit toad to ultimate success in poultry farming, and that road leads through the door of the trap nest. And so die trup nest is here to slay and no amount of adverse criticism can never lessen the real merits o*- Its work. London Lancashire Fire Ins. Co. Great American Fire Ins. Co.
