P ige Four Eastern Clackamas News Entered at the postoffice in Estacada, Oregon, as second-class mail. Published every Thursday at Estacada, Oregon UPTON H. GIBBS Editor and Manager. S ubscription R ates One year Six months Thursday, Jirly 3, 1919 This month begins the “dry- est” season the country as a whole, has ever known. But the wets are still hoping that a few refreshing showers may be vouchsafed to them before con stitutional prohibition sets in for good. t Theie is a little old lady, nine ty three years of age, living in England, to whom the peace treaty will bring especial relief. She is Eugenie ex-empress of the French, who was one of those re sponsible for precipitating the Franco-Prussian war in 1870, which resulted in the defeat of France and the loss of Alsace- Lorraine. Now the latter haw been restored and the shame 6f the former reversed, so she may well rejoice in spite of the bur den of years and the many trials and sorrows she has endured, that she has lived to see this day. Prosperity at the County Seat The Crown Willamette and Hawley Pulp and Paper compan ies announce general increase of 3 cents per hour in wages of em ployes to go into effect July 1st. This is an addition of 5120,000 per year to the payroll and Oregon City will have one from paper mills and Wooten mills, after July 1st. of $3,000,030 per year. THE LARGER FOURTH The Fourthjof July, our nation al Day of Independence, will this year receive new meaning and scope. For the original strike for freedom in self deter mination and the recognition of t lose inalienable rights of men, ‘‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,’' has been extended to other peoples of smaller and subject nationalities, or nations in the forming. It would not be surprising if the Fourth of July becomes international in charac ter, as the civi.ised world in* creases in democracy and the maintenance of governments “of the people, by the people and for the people,” whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed. • Thursday, July 3, 1919 EASTERN CLACKAM a í NEWS Since the signing of peace, the Huns have technically become * Our store will be closed from 10 A. There should be only one ques tion with you, and that is, “Does it pay?” or “Is there a paying market for the fruits we grow?" Would $200 or $300 an acre net profit interest you? Does it seem fabulous to say that one of your neighbors received $535.00 from a trifle over one acre of Logan berries, last season, netting him over $400. Would you care to talk with him? Would you accept a prop osition whereby vcu plant 10 acres to berries, and after the second year, receive $1,000 for the crop, without bothering about picking or berry crates, or $1,000 net for the next five to ten years? You would simply have to culti vate the ground and give proper care to the canes. Just such propositions will be offered you this fall by the Can nery at Estacada. Plan your a- creage now and think it over. There will be a meeting at one of the berry ranches some time this month, the date tc be an nounced later, for the benefit of those who are interested in mak ing larger returns on their farms. Some of your friends will teli you a few interesting facts at this meeting. We will be glad to write you individually regarding anything relative to cannerv crops. Drop us a card.
