NEWSPAPERS Are What the Community Makes Them OUR SLOGAN: Community Cooperation Devoted to the Interests o f Eastern Clackamas County V olume 12, N umber 19 SUGGESTIONS REGARD ING INFLUENZA CONTROL I From Estacada Schools, State, County and City Health Officers TO MEMBERS OF COMMUNITY CommunityhasSuffered Less, Schools in Better Condi tion than Many Others Three days after an unusual gathering of people there is a great increase in the number of cases. Thus, every Tuesday is high because of Saturday and Sunday gatherings. Therefore there should be no unnecessaty or unusual gatherings. Dances are the worst and should be pro hibited during the epidemic. Many cases remain carriers for three weeks after they are able to be up and around. These un consciously spread the desease. Masks seem to be the best pro tection in such cases. These to be effective should cover the nose and mouth, consist o f eight layers o f gauze, and be sterilized by dropping into boiling water for ten minutes after three hours use. It has been discovered that the disease is being spread to a greater extent than has been realized by utensils used in eat ing and drinking. Therefore all eating utensils should be steriliz ed frequently by boiling fifteen minutes. All patients and attendants should be quarantined fora period o f ten days following the resump tion o f normal temperature. Members o f the househo.d not in contact with the sick are not quarantined. Release from quar antine is only by the direction of the health officer. If there is no legally appointed city health officer, the attending physician shall give the certificate o f health. All school children must have such a certificate in order to re enter school if they have been ill (Concluded on Page 2) E st a c a d a , O regon , T h ursday , J anuary 30, 1919 Milton Evans at H om e , on Few Days’ Furlough The i|^any friends o f Milton Evans in Estacada were glad to see him once more on our streets, as he is on furlough for a few days from Camp Fremont, Cali fornia. He joined the service at Camp Lewis, last June 25th, and was transferred July 19th to Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, where he remained under a temperature qf 116 degrees until August, when he was sent to Camp Mer ritt and later sailed from Hobok en August 15th for Europe. He arrived at Liverpool, September 1st and then crossed the channel to France. From lack o f suitable food and exhaustion from too much hiking when not physically fit, due to want o f proper trans portation facilities, he broke down under the strain and was placed in the hospital at Lasenav where he was until a transport was available to take him to the U. S. On landing at Newport News he was transferred to the Richmond College hospital, where he was royally treated. On his journey to Camp Fre mont, Red Cross hospitality met him at every stop across the con tinent. He expects shortly to be ordered to Camp Lewis where he will be mustered out. At pres ent he is undecided as to his future plans, but his friends hope he will again locate here. He returned to Portland Fri day, where he is stopping with his sister Mrs. R. M. Standish. CANDLEM AS. Candlemas day falls on Sunday next. It is otherwise known as the Festival of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, or the Purification of St. Mary the Vir gin. It is a feast o f great anti quity, and is called Candlemas in honor of Christ being the Light o f the world, as predicted by the aged Simeon on that occasion, in the inspired hymn the Nunc Dimittis. Another reason is be- because the candles are blessed at the mass that day, for religious use during the following year. The State Penitentiary From what we can gather the penitentiary at Salem is a dis- grace to the state and totally un fit for its purpose. Criminals have certain rights which cannot be ignored. They are not entitl ed to luxurious quarters but they are to a well lighted, ventilated, heated and safe building in which to be housed. According to the best penologists punishment of the criminal should always keep in view the criminal’s possible reformation. This cannot be done if. he is placed in conditions which belong to the old brutal order o f things, which considered nothing too bad for the felon and had neither desire nor intention o f redeeming him from the error of his ways. The Minnesota state penitenti ary at Stillwater is probably the best in the U. S. and should serve as a model for our .own state. The public needs to be enlight ened so that another election it will not vote down the necessary appropriation, and this as much for its own benefit as for the con vict, for just, humane treatment even o f the outcast always pa>s. Tractor Demonstration A very successful and interest ing demonstration o f the Cleve land tractor, was given on Tues day afternoon o f this week, at the ranches o f Milt Mattoon and Walter Snuffins o f Garfield. A good sized and representative crowd was present to witness a really very remarkable perform ance o f this track laying type o f machine. The tractor was put to a severe test, both at plowing hard ground and disking very loose orchard soil. In each case it made a very satisfactory im pression on -those watching it. Mr. Phil Standish who is handl ing this machine, and through whose efforts the demonstration was arranged, feels very con fident that in the near future, several o f these machines will be in use in this section o f the county. # Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Bartlett motored to Portland yesterday. $1.50 P er Y ear THE RIG VICTORY LOAN IN APRIL IS THE LAST One More Big Job to Pay for the Victory or Immediate Demands of Victory THESE LOANS WILL BE HISTORY It W ill Not be a Time for Excuses—There Must be no Lagging The same spirit that character ized the last hour o f fighting be fore the armistice went into effect should be shown by the stay-at-homes for whom the Yanks fought in Franch. Here is the official report o f operations in those last few hours o f war: “ The 3rd Division advanced 3 kilometers east o f Breheville. Despite increased resistance by machine gun and artillery fire the 5th Division continued to advance capturing 18 prisoners, 3 large calibre guns, 6 minenwerfers and considerable material. In accord ance with the terms o f the arm istice hostilities on the front o f American armies ceased at 11:00 a. m. The Yanks didn’ t shirk that last job. Many gave their lives with peace a matter o f minutes away. Every American at home worth the victory won by those boys in khaki will work as hard in the coming loan as in the first. Armenian and Syrian Relief America is at this time engag ed in a campaign to raise thirty million dollars for the immediate relief o f the homeless, naked, starving Armenian and Syrian population within the Turkish empire. Th»* city o f Portland is raising $75,000. Oregon outside another $75,000. The Estacada district including Springwater, Viola, George, Garfield, Currins- ville. Eagle Creek, Douglas Ridge are asked for $900, The needs for this work are urgent. The necessity is great. The day is short. Let us all turn in and help when the committee calls. About $1 per family will do it.
