John C. Noe of Oregon City has been nominated by the Re publican County Central Com mittee for Recorder at the com ing election, in the place of D. C. Boyles withdrawn. Peter Carrol of Seattle who is going to spend the winter with his friend J. A. Brooks, on his ranch near town called at the News office Saturday morning and subscribed for the paper. Mrs. 0. K. Morton and Miss Kendall who have been stationed at the Fish Creek Mountain look out the past summer, under Mr. Wallace returned the forepart of last week. Mrs. Morton will re main in Estacada for sometime. The coolness in the temper ature, set us to work putting up our winter stoves. This is a job in which we keep our mouth rigid ly shut, lest we speak unadvised ly with our lips, and see that there are no mind readers around, while we are engaged in so do ing. G. A. Weaver an old friend of Rev. H. Spiess, now living in Portland, visited the latter Wed nesday of last week. Mr. Weav er was present when the Rev. H. Spiess was recommended for ad mission to the Southwest Miss ouri Conference thirty years ago. The two had a great time togeth er reviving old associations. J. W. Gartner who was cashier in the Estacada State Bank from 1908 to 1911, and then removed to Oatman Arizona, and more recently to Los Angeles, Califor nia, was visiting here Friday and Saturday. He returned to Port land, Saturday afternoon, where he will go to wo^k in the East Side Bank. His short visit afford ed much pleasure to his friends in town. A jolly “ get-to-gether” party of former high school students was given Tuesday evening at the home of Gladys Carpenter in honor of the boys who are leaving this week for Student Army Training. John Schenk and George Harkenrider are leaving for work at the U. of 0., Lewis Jones to Reed, while Clyde Denney, Oral Stormer and Atle Erickson are planning on attend ing the 0. A. C. EASTERN CLACKAMAS NEWS Mrs. Emily Lady and daughter Virginia, left last Monday for Wauna, Oregon, where they will spend the winter. Their many friends regret their departure, and will look forward to their re turn next spring. Henry Spiess was here with his parents, Rev. and Mrs. H. Spiess last Sunday. He has lately re turned from a training camp in California and has been appoint ed Instructor in Military Tactics at the Willamette university. The ladies of the Red Cross Auxiliary were busily engaged Saturday and Monday afternoons making aprons for the refugees. There should be a larger attend ance at their meetings, as the de mand for these articles is great and the time is short. After about three years’ faith ful service Miss Elna Hoygaard will sever her connection with this office on Friday evening. Her work during this period, has been of a most painstaking and conscientious character. She is as yet undecided as to her future plans, but in whatever she will engage, and wherever she may go she will carry with her the best wishes of the Eastern Clack amas News. Last Tuesday afternoon the ladies of Currinsville met with Mrs. Mattson to sew for the Red Cross. A business meeting was held after the sewing was done. Miss Della Lovell was elected chairman and Mrs. E. Li nn, treasurer. The ladies are trying to obtain permanent quarters for their sewing room and hope to have all the ladies who live in Currinsville, who do not sew with the Estacada Red Cross, meet with them every Tuesday after noon. Reception Tendered Teacher On last Friday evening the par ents of the Currinsville school children gave a reception at the Currinsville school house for the teacher, Mrs. Wilson. The meeting was a very in formal affair and resulted in the parents and teacher getting acquainted with one another. The meeting was presided over by Lester Hale, chairman of the school board. Various topics of interest to parents, pupils and teacher were discussed, the most important among them being the hot lunches for the pupils at noon. Mrs. Coop gave an interesting talk on this subject with the re sult that everyone voted for the re-establishment of the warm lunch at noon. This will be the first step towards ^standardizing the school. After the meeting was over all joined in singing “The Star Span gled Banner” and other patriotic songs after which the ladies ser ved coffee and cake. Mrs. Wilson seemed very much pleased with conditions as she found them, especially with the hearty welcome she received. We all wish that she may be very successful and happy with us during the coming school year. Page Five A. C.
