S pringw ater News Item s Contributed Mrs. W. A. Bard spent several days last week with relatives in Portland. Mrs. R. A. Pulley of Portland is visiting with her sister and brother, Mrs. Joe Guttridge and Ferd Zurcher. There was a new fence put around the Springwater church property last Wednesday. The Missionary Society served a din ner for the men in Grange hall, which was greatly enjoyed by all. This society held its month ly business meeting in the after noon, Florence Schenk being the leader. The meeting was well attended. There will be special meetings held at the Springwater Presby terian church, beginning Feb 4th, Mr. Hanson of Portland will preach. These meetings will be held every night continuing for two weeks. George Brown went to Port land this week, because of an other illness. / Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Paddison called on Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Cahill Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Sam Barr, of Estacada also spent the day with them. Miss Elsie Davis has recently returned to Eagle Creek to spend the winter with Mrs. Ballou and will enter E. H. S. Joe Fuchs one of Eagle Creek’s enlisted men spent Sunday with his folks. Alec Baker, shipped a carload of hardwood to Portland this week. At T he Family T h eatre A filmed version o f Ma r k Twain’s "Pudd’nhead Wilson" will be given at the Estacada Family Theatre on Thursday evening, February 7th, with The odore Roberts in the lead. On Saturday evening. February 9th, the popular actress Violet ; Mercereau will be seen in "Little Miss Nobody". Inquire of Mrs. S. A. Gorrel, Estacada. H ighland M other Dies The death of Mrs. Mary Ellen Mayfield of Highland, occurred January 28th, following a month's illness. Mrs Mayfield was well known in this section, where she had resided since 1867. She was the mother of eight children, among them being Mrs. Fred North and Willis Mayfield, who formerly re sided in Estacada. Funeral services were conduct ed at Oregon City Wednesday morning. Viola B reezes Contributed The Honor Roll of the Viola School for the month of January comprises-Leslie and Janet Ham ilton, Bernice Miller, Francis Cummin, Amy Mattoon, Harold Bristol and Ralph Bateson. The surveying crew for the Carver railroad were through Vi ola again last week and Mr. Creason of Stone says—"The rail road is sure to come this time". The survey covers a line passing through the warehouse of the Vi ola store and within a few yards of the Peter Failing house. Miss Mary Rorick spent the week-end visiting her brother in Portland. The Epworth League Social at the James Hamilton h«me Friday evening, was well attended. The League plans to hold a Valentine Social at the church on Friday evening, February 15th, when a short program will be given, games enjoyed and refreshments served cafeteria style. C. H. Bishop of Bend spent a few days as a guest of the Law rences in Springwater this w eek. S. S. Lasswell of Sfcdan, Kan sas, who has lately returned to Portland, where he will make his home, was a guest for a day this week at the home of his brother, A. L. Lasswell of Estacada. All members and friends are invited to be present at the regu lar meeting of the Ga r f i e l d Grange, which occurs next Sat urday, February 2nd. Henry Schmidt of George has installed a new pumping outfit on his place, expecting to sobtl have running water in his house and barns.
