Established Membership Drive Begins In Earnest Estacada Streets All records were shattered by the heavy rainfall, which reached a climax Wednesday morning and which for a time threatened to do much damage, although aside from stopping: all train and mail service, washing out gravelled roads and a few small bridges, did little actual harm in this community. Owing to the topography of this immediate section, less dam age was done than in other parts of the Northwest, although the full extent of the injuries to foundations of bridges, washed out road*, etc., cannot be ascer tained yet. New h'gh water marks were established in the Clackamas and tributary streams, with the mud dy wa'ers afloat with drift wood. All sor*s of h mors were current of the weakening of the dams at Cazadero and River Mill, result- in phone inquiries from Oregon City. Gladstone and Portland. Thè torrent of water, with its burden of trees, roots and stumps passing over the River Mill dam was a grand sight and witnessed bv many local peonie. In Esta cada Park the Clackamas rose to within eight feet of the observa tion platform on the point. In Estacada proper, the sewers were unable to handle the water, with parts of Main Street and Broadway »esemhling Venetian canals, with from six inches to two feet of water fo'lowir g 2nd St. and reaching the river through Terrace Addition Flat. The so-called Kimmel Creek, draining the Reagan Hill canyon, b oke over its banks and poured through Estacada’s business sec tion, flooding basements and in some instances ground floors. Up to Thursday noon, no train or mail service had arrived fur ther than Ronng since Tuesday night, with the Deep Creek tres- t ’e near Barton reported to have been weakened by the flood. Work from a farming stand point was at a standstill during the flood and many humorous in cidents occurred in connection with the futile attempts made in Estacada to drain the town. $1.60 P kr Y ear NEWS HEMS FROM ALE SECTIONS C om m unity T ree Christm as Eve A nn u al County B udget M eeting Saturday Under the auspices of the Es tacada Parent-Teacher Associa tion and with the aid of the schools and churches, a commun ity Christmas tree and entertain ment will be given in the high school auditorium on Christmas eve, beginning at 8’elock. The leading feature of this en tertainment, aside from the tree and the “ treats” for the young sters will be a*, elaborate series of tableaux, entitled “The Nativ ity of Christ.” Also local and school musical taient will take part and an enjoyable evening is promised. This is a community affair in every sense and all parents and children are invited to be present. From the present outlook, Eastern Clackamas will be well represented at the annual Coun ty Budget Mee.ing to be held at the court house in Oregon City, next Saturday, Decern Tier 22nd. To date, final arrangements for running a special car from here, have not been perfected, owing to the many taxpayers w-ho are planning to make the trip by auto. John Ely and John Page of Estacada. who are handling the arrangements for the special cat- had been unable to obtain suffic ient reservations by Thursday noon, to warrant going ahead with the excursion, but will hold the matter open until Friday evening, in hopes that a sufficient number will signify a willingness to make the trip, to assure the expenses. If you have not already done so, phone either Mr. Ely or Mr. Page at once and tell them you will join the special car excursion. A. G. Ames of Estacada, the Federa Hunter from this district returned home last week, bring ing with him his usual supply of varmint hides, including one cou gar and three bob-cats, the result of two weeks hunting. To date, Ames’ record is second to none among the federal hunters of the Northwest, according to the government figures. The Eagle Creek Red Cross Auxilliary now has a member ship of twenty-two and is meet ing tonight, Thursday, at the Ed Burnett home, w here the cam paign for additional members, in accordance with the national drive, will receive attention. A Christmas program will be given at the Springwater Pres byterian Church on Christmas night, beginning at 7:40 P. M. Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Bumgard- ner of Columbia City are this week moving to Estacada, occu pying Mrs. Bumgardners’s house on Pierce St. At the I O. O. F. Hall on Fri day evening, December 21st, will be held the annual Joint Installa tion of the Estacada Lodge, A. F. & A. M. No. 146 and Mount ain Chapter O. E. S. No. 108. with a banquet following at the Hotel Estacada. The young folks of the Esta cada High School enjoyed a dancing party last Friday even ing at the I. O. O. F. Hail, with dancing continuing until mid night. The music as furnished by Mrs. May me Boyle and Neil Bronson was exceptionally good. The six Eagle (’reek boys who last week enlisted have been duly accepted and with the ex ception of Will Still, who has been transferred to Texas, are stationed at Vancouver, being at tached to the Signal Corps. The five being Roy Wilcox, John Fuchs, Howard Longwell, A- dolph Still and Earl Odell. E. C. Morgan of the Hotel Es tacada, while wandering around in the dark in search of the elu sive axe and woodpile in the basement of the hotel, last week ran into a projecting nail in the wall, ba^lv tearing his left ear, necessitating the services of a doctor. In the places of Irwin D. Wright and Mis. A. K. Morton, former chairman and secretary of the Estacada Red Cross Asso ciation, who have moved away. Mrs. E. W. Bartlett and R. M. Standish were this week selected to till the vacancies as secretary and chairman. These, with Mrs. M. H. Evans as treasurer, con stitute the officers of the local auxilliary. The entire attention of the Estacada organization will be devoted to the present Red Cross Drive Membership Campaign, not only handling the city proper but affiliating with the nearby auxilliaries, in putting Eastern Clackamas County to the front again, in this, as it has in all other patriotic campaigns. Through the curtesy of the Es tacada Telephone Company, which kindly donated its Broad way store front, artistically dec orated headquarters have been established, which will be in charge of Mrs. Bartlett, Mrs. Lovelace and other Red Cross workers, ably assisted by their husbands. Messrs. Givens Bart lett, and Stephens are working among the neighboring schools, clubs and other organizations in presenting this important mem bership campaign, besides work ing with dozens of others in so liciting the memberships. Clackamas County’s quota is 12,000 members and this com munity should exceed the thous and mark. A membership, con tinuing from Christmas 1917 to Christmas 1918 costs $1., w'ith the solicitors giving each new member a “service flag” or “ but ton” as a receipt. In due time certificates of membership will be sent to all joining at this time. Special posters or insignia are to be distributed to homes, where Red Cross members reside. The public is requested not lo wait for some solicitor to call u|x»n them, but asked to come to the Estacada headquarters and take out a membership, or if in the vicinity of Eagle ( ’reek, that auxilliary can issue the necessary- flag or button receipts. In the case of parties already belonging to ihe Red Cross, tins drive is supposed to include th^m also, as all present memberships expire Christmas next. There are also other forms of memberships, including special $2 per year ones, life member ships, etc. Fo»* information as to these specials call at the Esta cada headquarters.
