CLACKAMAS Devoted to the Interests of Eastern Clackamas County V olume 11, N umber 12 COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP UNDECIDED Estacada And Oregon City Battle At Football To A Tie Score In all probabilities, the hijrh school football championship of Clackamas County will have to remain undecided this year, as last Wednesday afternoons game at Oregon City, resulted in a no sco! e on both sides. This contest was one of the gamest struggles ever staged in the county interscholastic his tory, with neither team able to advance the ball nearer the goal than the twenty yard line. Canemah Field, on which Ore gon City has to stage its games, while ordinarily a rough, rock strewn spot, was in poor condi tion that day, from continued rains, with a drizzle going on during the game. Neither team was able to play to the best of its ability, with forward passes being all uncom pleted, owing to slowness of the Held and the wetness of the ball. During the first half Estacada had a shade the best of the fight, being able repeatedly to make its ten yards during the four downs, with Oregon City unable to make a first down, w’ith or** txcep ion during the contest But in the exchange of punts, the county- seaters had a slight advantage, which substantially offset the gains made by Estacada. At no time during the game did Oregon City have a chance to score, although Estacada threat ened to for a time, following a long end run with the ball for a first down on the 20 yard line. But then occured a fumole, with the opponents punting out to safety. The refereeing and umpiring, as handled by Jake Kisley of Or egon City and Burgess F. Ford, of Stayton, formerly principal of the Estacada Schools, was fair in every way, with few if any pro tests registered. Both the Estacada and Oregon City teams were handicapped by the loss of some of their best men, with the county-seaters claiming four men. out of the game. For clean play, this game was above par and good spoi isman- ship was especially evident on the part, of Estacada and Capt. Jannsen, who, rather than take advantage o f a technicality, which might have resulted in winning the game, refused the reward. This incident was the result of an Oregon City-man, who in attempting to block a punt, received Capt. Jannsen’s foot in the pit of the stomach, knocking him out completely. According to the rules. Oregon City’s player in colliding with Jannsen’s ' boot, technically “roughed the punter’’, with Es- Concluded on back page E stacada , O regon , T hursday , D ecember 6, 1917 $1.50 B er Y ear CLACKAMAS COUNTY’S BUDGET FOB ! CLUB Bis* Delegation To Attend County Budget Meeting Dec. 22nd The fine chicken dinner, served by the ladies of the Christian Church, which was an impor- tant feature of the Farmers' Merchants’ Cluh meeting Mon day night, at the Hotel Estacada. was enjoyed by sixty-six repre sentative citizens of this com munity, with about a «core more of taxpayers from outlying dis tricts arriving in time to take part In the meeting which fol lowed. The annual election of officers was quickly disposed of, with the meeting unanimous in its choice of A. VV. Botkin of Car- field as president; Frank Ewing of Viola, vice-president ami A. L. Lass well of Estacada. secre tary-treasurer. The principal part of the meet ing was given over to a detailed discussion of the various appro priations shown in the Clacka mas County Budget, as prepared by the county court and which appropriations are to lie accepted or rejected by the taxpayers at the annual meeting to be held in Oregon City on December 22ml As to the attitude of the meet ing on the different appropria tions, no menti ri will l>e made herewith, but the taxpayers were substantially unanimous in their stand for and against certain items and appointed a committee, comprising H. C. Stephens, A. * W. Botkin, Walter Givens, E. -W. Bartlett and It. M. Standish to act as spokesmen at the Ore gon City meeting. It was also the sense of the gathering that the effectiveness of Eastern Clackamas’ protest or endorsement of the county budget, as presented by the com mittee, would be entirely depen dent on the strength of the back ing of taxpayers, who also were in attendance. In order to get together a big delegation for this purpose, the following committee was appointed: John Ely, chair man, John Page and Theo. Ahl- berg of Estacada; K H Currin of Currinsville; Fred Anderson of Eagle Creek; Ernest Hoffmeis- ter of Upper Eagle Creek; Har vey Gibson of Barton; N. M. Tracy and Elmer Davis of Gar field; Robert Miller of George; Sherman Kilgore of Springwater and Frank Ewing of Viola. It is the duty of every loyal taxpayer to get in touch with some member of this committee ami advise them if he or she will attend the annual meeting on Decern l»er 22ml and if so, wheth er by auto or by joining with others in chartering a special train.
