Draft Board Busy This WeeK
The Clackamas county exemp­
tion hoard to pass upon claims
of those drafted for service in
the army, is bein# held in Ore­
gon City this week. The exami­
nation commenced Tuesday and
will continue until the county’s
quota of 52 has been secured.
35 are bein# called each day.
Of the first 35 called, four or
five had already enlisted and in
the second 35 two had enlisted.

Miss Leila Howe went to Ore­
gon City Monday where she will
attend teachers’ training school
for three w^eks, a s a continuation
of her studies at the State Normal
during the summer. Miss Howe
has been secured to teach a term
of school near Mololla. Oregon.

R. M. Standish, editor of this pa­
per. Mrs. Standish, A. H. Stan­
dish and wife, Phil and Stewart
Standish, Miss Laura Standish
and Dora Curren, left by auto
Saturday for Clackamas lake for
a few days outing. Fishing at
this place is considered excellent
and the men folks in the party
expect to make a big catch of
mountain trout. Editor Standish
no doubt will have some hi# fish
stories to relate on his return.
W. K. Corbin, who lives in the
Garfield district, brought to this
office a hunch of prophi wheat
and one of gray oats, grown on
his place, which are samples of a
good crop of fall sown seed, con­
sidering the severe freeze they
had and the dry season now.

AI f of Oregon City, at the home
of Mrs. Alf’s parents, Mr. and
Mrs. N. M. Tracy of Garfield,
August 1st, a son.

not exempted or discharged, and
*has |M)sted their names.
11. Men who have passed
their physical examination and
been certified as called for mili­
tary service, may not be called
intd actual service for some time.
They will be notified when to re­
port for military duty.
12. IN THE MEANTIME
Any man subject to draft may
volunteer in the Army or Navy
of the United States until his
name is actually posted by his
local Ixiard as having been called
up for physical examination.

Miss Gladys Townsend is now
one of the “ Hello” girls in the
local telephone office, having tak­
en the place of Miss Elva Adams
who resigned the first of this
month.

Miss Belle Inglish returned the
latter part of last week from
Kansas where she went on tin*
sad mission of performing the
last loving tribute to her late de­
parted mother. She was accom­
panied home from Portland by
her sister, Mrs. Jenkins, who
was in a hospital at that place
for a number of days.
