Pet Ants Are Barred
From United States
Washington, D. C.—Mrs. C. W.
Morse’s pet ants cannot be admitted to
the United States. No stretch of the
immigration laws will permit these
undesirable alien insects to enter.
They will be deported at the expense
of the steamship
company that
brought them over.
This is the dictum of the bureau of
entomology of the United States de
partment of agriculture, as announced
by Dr. Leland C. Howard, chief en
tomologist, who said:
"Of course it is not a question of
Mrs. Morse's ants being pets, for the
law is absolute. They are insects and
under the law no foreign insects may
be imported into the United States.”

Volcano Begins Eruption.
Tokio—A severe eruption of the
volcano on Suwarose island, south of
Kyushu, began here Sunday. The
flames rose 500 feet above the mouth
of the crater An expedition has been
sent to give relief to the 280 inhabi
tants of the Island.
The long extinct volcano Chokai,
near Sakata, also is in eruption. This
mountain is inhabited by fishermen.
New York Has More Snow,

heavy falls of snow still in evidence in
the outlying sections of the city, an
other 3) inches fell Sunday, 24 hours
after the official entry of spring. Sev

clear the principal streets.

London—“ War in Ulster” is the
startling headline which the sensation
al London newspapers are displaying
in the blackest type.
The government began to place its
regular troops in Ireland Saturday, so
they might be in a position to deal
with any situation that may arise.
The cooler men among the loyalists
and the Ulster Unionists, however, be
lieve nothing resembling war is in
sight.
The army council some time ago
considered the possibilities of home
rule strife and instructed Lieutenant
General Sir Arthur Henry Fitzroy
Padget, who commands the Irish gar
risons, to take necessary precautions
to maintain order and safeguard prop
erty. A general redistribution of the
forces in Ireland therefore was begun.
Two regiments were sent from the
South to reinforce the Ulster gar
risons, while the troops in Ulster were
removed to new stations in conformity
with the custom that in the event of
hostilities or rioting soldiers should
not be compelled to encounter people
with whom they had formed friend
ships.
The possibilities of a collision be
tween the British soldiers and the Ul
ster volunteers resulting from the
superheated political feeling are rec
ognized, but the leaders on both sides
are trying to exert a pacific influence.
Sender of Poisoned
Candy Faces Penitentiary
Portland—Under $6000 cash bail,
which she was unable to furnish, MrB.
Edith Edna Hawley, by her own con
fession sender of six packages of pois
oned candy through the mails to three
step-children, her own baby, and a
woman of whom she was jealous, was
bound over to the Federal grand jury
at a preliminary hearing before A. M.
Cannon, United States commissioner.
The charge against her was sending
poison through the mails with intent
to kill. Four counts may be pressed
the United States district attorney.
The penalty on any one of them, un
der the Federal statute, is up to $5000
fine and 10 years in the penitentiary.
The extreme penalty on the four
counts would be $20,000 fine and 40
years in the penitentiary.

Salem, Or.—The first forest fire of
the season was reported to State For
ester Elliott Saturday by Charles Uni-
cume, chief fire warden for the James
D. Lacey company.
The fire was
near Grande Ronde and started in an
old bum. Mr. Unicume was instruct
ed to make every effoit to subdue the
blaze, the state fire wardens not hav
ing been assigned to duty as yet. “ It
is the earliest forest fire in this state
on record,” said Mr. Elliott, “ and is
due to the dry weather and the lack of
snow on the mountains.”

Those of Middle Age Especially.
When you have found no remedy for the horrors that
oppress you during change of life, when through the long
hours of the day it seems as though your back would break,
when your head aches constantly, you are nervous, de
pressed and suffer from those dreadful bearing down pains,
don’t forget that Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound
is the safest and surest remedy, and has carried hundreds
of women safely through this critical period.
Read what these three women say:
From Mrs. Homung, Buffalo, N. Y.
N. Y.— “ I am writing to let you know how much your
medicine has done for me. I failed terribly duiing the last winter
and summer and every one remarked about my appearance. I suf
fered from a female trouble and always had pains in my back, no
appetite and at times was very weak.
“ I was visiting at a friend’s house one day and she thought I needed
Lydia E. Finkham’s Vegetable Compound. I took it and have gained
eight pounds, have a good appetite and am feeling better every day.
Everybody is asking mo what I am doing and I recommend Lydia E.
Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound. You may publish this letter if you
wish and I hope others who have the samo complaint will see it anil
et health from your medicine as I did.”— Mrs. A. H oeml ' ko . 91

80. R ichmond , V a .—“ I was troubled with a bearing down pain and
a female weakness and could not stand long on my feet. O f all the
medicines I took nothing helped me like Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vege
table Compound. I am now regular and am getting along fine. I
cannot praise the Compound too much. It has been a blessing to mo
and I hope it will be to other women.”— Mrs. D. T yler , 23 West

Pains in Side, Could Hardly Stand.
Wis.—“ I was in a bad condition, suffering from a female
trouble, and I had such pains in my sides I could hardly move. Be
fore I had taken the whole of ono bottle of Lydia E. I’inkham’s Veg
etable Compound I felt better, aril now I am well and can do a good
day’s work. I tell everybody what your medicine has done for me.”
