HUNDREDS DIE FROM HEAT Mississippi Valley and East Suffer ing Severely. Chicago —- R eports received up to W ednesday night allowed th a t a t least 112 persons died W ednesday as a re su lt o f the heat wave in the Central W est, which has continued un in ter ruptedly for six days. It extended from D enver to P ittsb u rg , and as far north as Lake Superior. From 96 degrees a t P ittsburg, the tem p eratu re through the whole Middle W est ranged well into the 90s. M ar quette, usually cool, on the shore of L ake Superior, recorded 92 degrees and culm inating w ith 102 degrees in Chicago. This gave Chicago a record for the day o f being the h ottest place in the U nited S ta te s except for Tuc son, A riz., where the tem perature also was 102. F a ta litie s due to the heat were re ported a t H ibbing, M inn.; Biwabik, M inn.; M ilwaukee, Racine, Lacrosse, W is .; Peoria, St. Louis, Grand Rapids, Cleveland and Chicago. In Chicago alone th ere were 47 deaths officially reported. From different points in W isconsin 13 deaths w ere reported. TO K E E P Y O U T H and beauty—to prevent wrinkles and “crow's, feet’’ and deep black circles under the eyes— nothing is as good as lP,Srce.s F AVORITE P RESCRIPTION, Give it a fair trial for banishing those distressing pains or Bulgarians Have Advantage- Ser- via Suffers More Than Dur ing War With Turkey. I.ondon—A fte r ten days of fighting, more severe and deadly in character than anything in the last Balkan war, a little lig h t begins to break on the hith erto obscure operations. In the first place, the Servians have lost more men th an in the whole previous cam paign, and semi-official sta te m en ts issued a t B elgrade have the ap p ear ance of an intention to prepare the public for news o f a disaster. D esperate fighting, w ith varying fortunes, has progressed along the V ardar and B regalinitsa rivers, and seems to be in favor of the B ulgar ians. Im portant news has been received of the Bulgarian invasion of Servia through Belogradchyk, 45 m iles no rth east of Nish, S e rv ia ’s m ost im portant fortified town. No indication is given of the stre n g th of the Bulgarian col umn a t this point, but the B ulgarians declare they have defeated the S er vians and captured five guns and a q u antity of o th er w ar m aterial, and, by the occupation of the passes, to have opened th e road to Nish. T here is heavy fighting also be tween the Servians and B ulgarians to the south of Istip and in the neighbor hood of Kotchana. About 200,000 men are engaged, and the losses on both sides appear to be terrible. B ulg aria’s stra te g y appears to be to hold the G reeks in check, probably w ith com paratively small forces, while she deals w ith Servia. This assum p tion, if correct, would explain the vic torious advance of the Greek army. Unconfirmed reports credits the Bul garians w ith victories near K orili, giving them the key to U skup, and w ith an outflanking m ovem ent from the south of Tahynos Lake, which would cut off the Greek re tre at. Saloniki dispatches continue to re port Greek victories. The G reeks are said to have captured 16 guns a t Doi- ran. Evidence o f desperate fighting is found in the arrival of 8000 wound ed a t Saloniki, tax in g the tow n’s ac commodations and resources to the u t term ost. A conservative estim ate of the killed and wounded in last w eek’s fighting fixes the num ber a t from 30,- 000 to 40,000. Thousands of d e stitu te refugees from the scene o f the fight ing are coming into Saloniki. The G reeks continue to m ake whole sale charges ag ain st the B ulgarians of burning and p illaging all the villages they abandon and of com m itting m ur ders, m utilation and o ther horrors.
