THE $i A Y E A R T U I DOWN BUILDING I Voters Decide against Dom estic Science Addition REMEMBER PROGRESS Only Paper in East Clackamas Estacada Pharmacy By a vote rf 50 to 11, the voters of Estacada sch jo I district decided against constructing, at this time, a building to bouse the domestic science and manual training depait j ments, suggested as likely to be add ed to the course at the High school next year. The matter was brought up soon er than expected liecauscof the bur ning of the Estacada Pavilion, which left the athletic department of the school, without a floor on which to play basketball. The voters, however, were strongly of the opinion that further ex]>endi- ture, at this time, is ill advised. There were a number of speakers for aud against the proplsitiou, Prin cipal B. F. Ford outlining the ntc essity fot additional room aud sub milting an estimate of $700 for tin building. Prof Guthrie told of tin movement to have state appropria lions for schools which have tin manual traiuing aud domestic science departments and took occasion to compliment the district for the ail vanced position it had in the stale. Dr. Adix added a word of encour agement for the building, as did W. F. Carey and G J. Kelly, real estate manager for the P. R. L it P. Co. who happened to be present. J. VV. Reed thought the building would be alright if the district could afford it The principal speaker against tin uilding was E. S. Womer who hi e endorsi:«; athletics to some extent, thought a small town didn't need them as badly as a city. His idea was that children could applv their education at home after school by doing chores and manipulating a potato digger. Mrs. O. O. Bland thought the district was going too fast. She said she was proud of the school aud believed it did ex celleut work. Chairman VYoodle appointed as tellers and judges, F. J. Harkeuder. H. M James and Edwin Bates, who collected the votes and announc ed the result. Athletics and espec ially basketball will be at a stand still for the winter.
