A feature of the meeting was the reading of two let ters, by Chairman Karl Kilgore, secured from Hood River fruit ranchers regarding taxes. The letters were divergent in sentiment, one strongly for benefits of the divis ion from Wasco, the other doubtful. Both rauchers owu cultivated lands, worth $ i 800 an acre; before divis ion the land brought about $500 au acre. One rancher complained that his taxes were higher than they were before division; the other re joiced in it and declared that under no circumstances would thev con sider reuniting to Wasco, for he ar gued. the people received the bene fits, land values had Increased rapidly and the proportion of tax increase was far short of the value advance. While the crowd was gathering, Dr. H. V. Adix, who made his maiden speech for county division, played some lively airs on the lodge organ and then came the opening discussion by L. G. Bel fils. He confined his excellent talk, largely to taxation. He was followed by J. S. McCurdy who took up present conditions and compared them with other counties where centralized go vernment was a distinct advantage and painted a glowing picture of the benefits to be derived from division, showing that Cascade county would be handled exclusively by the tax payers instead of the non-taxpaing vote in Clackamas county affairs. Standish closed the formal discussion of the subject, during which he took occastou to show that the state board of equalization ar ranged the taxes according to the valuation of land, which proportion ed the rate of taxation in Hood River county, according to the as sessed valuation. Intense interest was manifested by the people of Spriugwater. A majority professed themselves in favor of division. Next week, there will be meetings at Barton and Eagle Creek.
