In many parts of the east the Nor way or sycamore maple Is a favorite for street planting, though It Is some what Intolerant of dust and smok« and Is therefore better suited to rural districts and villages than congested city centers. As It Is a spreading tree, care should be taken to prevent Its bending too low. It thrives In southern California as well as any ol the maples, but seems to thrive still better farther north. Nature seema to dictate an evergreen country, and It Is somewhat puzzling to know why we have sycamores, cottonwoods, etc., almost Identical with species found In eastern states. In central and northern California, where oaks are deciduous, the maples thrive and nc objection should be made to use on street and highway. Practice Will Make Perfect. PEST Wichita, Kan.—After two weeks of most diligent searching by scores of men, who have turned over every brush pile and combed every field In this part of the country, no trace of the missing Ralp Jackson has been found. When this young man, alumnus of Chicago university and the Friends university of Wichita and teacher of mathematics In*the Sterling (Kan.) high school, stepped off a Santa Fe train In this city he apparently stepped out of the world. The only thing that might possibly indicate that he intended to disappear is that he drew all his money, about $65, from a Sterling bank before he took the train for Wichita. Two per sons, however, refuse positively to give any significance to this. They are Miss Mabel Coppick of Enid, Okla.. whom he was to marry this fall, and tho girl’s brother, a schoolmate and chum of Jackson. This brother has been most indus trious of ail the searchers. He an nounced he will find Jackson’s body, if he Is dead, and will find the man himself if he is alive. The last person who remembers seeing him is Calvin Knight, a student friend, with whom he rode to Wichita that night. When the train arrived here Jackson told Knight he was go ing to walk to a dormitory on the Friends campus to surprise Professor Truesdall, a particular friend when he was in college here. Although the campus Is two miles from the depot, Jackson picked up his suit case and trudged away towards i t Closely adjoining the site of the Boston & Maine car shops in Billerica, the surveyors discovered a gravestonr marking the spot where 100 years ago five persons, victims of smallpox, were buried. The stone is still in good condition, although mossy with age. The foot stone as well as the headstone Is solid, giving evidence of careful work on the part of the ones who placed it there. The grave was evidently chosen a century ago as a secluded spot, and when found trees, underbrush and shrubbery nearly hid It from sight. The words on this headstone are: Erected in memory of and to desig nate the place where Asa Grost, Jr.. Levi Frost, Eleanor Farmer, Sarah Hodgman and Samuel Batchelder were buried, who died of smallpox, August. 1811. At first the Boston & Maine con sidered getting the consent of the state to remove the stone and the dust of the bodies, but it has been de cided to let the grave remain where It Is. So these five persons will rest where they are and their bed of the last century will not be disturbed. No relative of the ones buried seem at all concerned about the grave and it is doubtful if any descendants of them are living In Billerica or Lowell at the present time.
