The program for the twentieth
annual meeting of ttie Oregon Dairy
man's Association, to be held in
Pottland December 7-8, lias been
issued and it contaius a great deal
that will be of much interest to the
keeper of cows.
Addresses by
practical expertsand exhibits show
ing improved methods will 1« seen
Nothing can be of greater value, !
not only to those actively engaged j
in the dairy industry, but to the
whole state as well. A large at
tendance at the sessions of the con
vention is expected.
Butter and
cheese makers will meet in Port
land at about the same time.
Hood River and Albany have
held their apple fairs and are ready
to show their prize-winners at the
Oregon Apple Show in Portland
November 15 18. Both fruit dis
plays were a credit to the two apple
centers and they will be htard from
when the prizes are awarded at
Portland. Preparations are com
plete for this event and it promises
to be the best exhibit yet held by
the State Horticultural Society.
A special committee of the Port
land Commercial Club is boosting
Hax culture with the hope of build
ing up an industry in this state. A
meeting was held during the week
and considerable pxogress is being
made Investigations have shown
that flax of exceptionally long fiber
can be grown here and all facilities
are favorable for lineu manufacture
That seaweed of the Pacific Coast
will produce $12.000,000 annually
ip potash for fertilizer is a discovery
lately made by Secy, Wilson of the
Department of Agriculture. Here
is a chance for Oregon’ s coast line
to contribute an entirely new pro
duct to the wealth of the state.

NOISE OF THUNDER.
Theory as to the Cause of the Craokle»
Roar and Rumble.
It has irsually been thought that the
noise of thunder is u nused by the clos
ing up of fhe vacuum created by the
passage <»f the lightning, the air rush
ing in from all sides with u chip. But
the intensity of the noise is rather dis
proportionate. and It is now supposed
thunder is due to the intense heating
of gases, especially the gas of water
vapor along the line of electric dis
charge and the consequent conversion
of suspended moisture into steam at
enormous pressure.
In this way the crackle with whhdi
a peal of thunder sometimes begius
might be regarded ns the sound of
steam explosiou on a small scale caus
ed by discharges Itefore the main
flash. The rumble would ho the over
lapping steam explosions, and the final
dap. which sounds loudest, would ho
the steam explosion nearest to tbo
auditor.
In the case o f rambling*thunder the
lightning Is passing from cloud to
cloud. When the flash passes from
tbo earth to the clouds the clap is
loudest nt the beginning. Trowbridge
gave substance to these suppositions
by causing electric flashes to pass
