Theory as to the Cause of the Craokle» Roar and Rumble. It has irsually been thought that the noise of thunder is u nused by the clos ing up of fhe vacuum created by the passage <»f the lightning, the air rush ing in from all sides with u chip. But the intensity of the noise is rather dis proportionate. and It is now supposed thunder is due to the intense heating of gases, especially the gas of water vapor along the line of electric dis charge and the consequent conversion of suspended moisture into steam at enormous pressure. In this way the crackle with whhdi a peal of thunder sometimes begius might be regarded ns the sound of steam explosiou on a small scale caus ed by discharges Itefore the main flash. The rumble would ho the over lapping steam explosions, and the final dap. which sounds loudest, would ho the steam explosion nearest to tbo auditor. In the case o f rambling*thunder the lightning Is passing from cloud to cloud. When the flash passes from tbo earth to the clouds the clap is loudest nt the beginning.
