The Estacada Progress « e — 4 Cadi ThervSev HSTACADA OREGON RESUME OF THE WEEK'S DOINGS General Review o f Important Hap penings Presented in a Brief and Comprehensive Manner for Busy Readers— National, Political, His torical and Commercial. Israel W. Durham, a prominent poll tician o f Philadelphia, is dead. The Pittsburg streetcar strike was settled satisfactorily to all concerned after a day o f rioting. Li Ching Hsu, nephew o f Li Hung Chang, is dead. He was the Chinese iharge d'affaires at Mexico City. The shops and roundhouse o f the Tonopah & Goldfield road at Tonopah Nev., have been destroyed by fire. DYNAMITE S T O P S PHONES. Heavy Explosion Jars Business Part of Chicago. Chicago, June 29.— An explosion supposed to have been caused by dyna mite did great damage in the business district tonight, injured two or thr persons severely, and wrecked stores and windows for a block near Clark and Washington streets. The exact nature o f the explosion is unknown, because o f the great amount of debris thrown about the alley where it occurred. The police think it an other in the series o f gamblers’ war bombs that have mystified detectives for more than two years. The scene o f the explosion was an alley in the rear o f the central tele phone exchange. The Chicago Tele phone company was unable to do any more business during the night. Two restaurants facing on Clark street were blown practically into the streets, food being scattered over the tracks. In this alley also was the rear en trance to Powers & Lambert’ s saloon headquarters for Martin B. Madden and his associates in the building trades. Madden and his men are figur ing largely in labor disputes at pres ent, and have been the subject of grand jury indictments. Another place opening into the alley which was badly damaged, was the cash register store o f Mont Tenness, who is alleged to conduct several gamb ling places. Tenness’ place has been raided frequently by the police. An other bomb was exploded there a year ago. ____________ NEWS ITEMS OF GENERAL INTEREST FROM THE STATE OF OREGON DAIRY HERDS PROFITABLE. HINTS FOR FRUIT SHIPPERS. Wallowa Farmers Ship Large Quan Agricultural Department to Show How tities o f Buttir to Pendleton. to Pack for Shipment. Wallowa — The Wallowa Valley Cream company shipped 1,649 pounds o f butter to Pendleton markets a few days ago. This is the first big ship ment o f butter made from this county, and it represents just one week’ s cream gathered in this immediate vi cinity. During that week the cream ery paid the dairymen nearly $100 in cash. Their checks for May totalled more than $1,200. Dairying is proving exceedingly profitable in this vicinity. Last mon'h Tulley Bros, averaged more than $10 clear profit from each of a herd o f 32 cows. The herd is tended by two men and a milking machine is employed. They could increase the herd to nearly double its present size without requir ing any additional help. W ash ington — Representative Haw ley has received the follow ing lett from the secretary o f a grico1* response to a recent recon on behalf o f the shippers pies, pears, peaches, prunes, ,,es and other fruits grown in ( I- “ Your esteemed fa t o f the 10th instant is at hand, requesting that competent man be assigned to Oregon for the purpose of teaching the people o f that state how to ship various kinds o f perishable fruits. This department is carrying on extensive investigations along this line in different parts o f this | country, and it has been our desire for some time to extend the work in the extreme Northwest, but up to this time we have not been able to do so. G. Harold Powell, who is in charge of ; the fruit transportation and storage in- j I vestigations, is planning to take a trip to Washington and Oregon during the present summer in order to become ac with the problems o f this na J quainted ture that need developing in those i states. It íb Mr. Powell’s intention to visit Oregon on this trip. “ It will not be possible to cary on I definite investigations in the North west during the present summer, but I can assure you that our investigations will be extended to that section just as soon as it can be done.” AUSTRIA O U S T S STANDARD. Will Build Reservoirs and Aid Homs Refineries lo Fight Octopus. Vienna, June 25. Owing to the de cisive intervention o f the imperial gov ernment, the Standard Oil company’s plans fur gaining control o f the Gali cian petroleum industry have suffered a final and crushing defeat. The Aus trians have withdrawn the contract v u the company, which would have ed to the American concern a .mating position in the Galician oil ..elds, for which it has been striving many years. The minister o f finance has under taken to build reservoirs and lease them to oil men at rents much less than those demanded by the Standard Oil company. Moreover, home refiners will escape the handicap o f heavy re bates cn the price o f the raw product which the Standard was t i have en joyed under the contract now canceled. The government expresses a hope that competition will be sharpened through abrogation o f the contract, but it is probable that lively fight will fol low lor export trade, which vitally affects the Standard’s position in Ger many. BIDS GALLED FOR ON NATRON ROAD Hdrrimdn to Build 60 Miles of New Line at Once. Oregon Eastern When Completed Will Be Main Line o f Southern Pacific — Start From Both Ends and Bal ance o f Line Wdl Be Finished in Near Future. Portland, June 26.— Bids for the con struction o f 59.48 miles o f the Oregon Eastern railroad, projected from Na t-on to Klamath Falls, will be received in th« Southern Pacific offices at San Francisco during the next two weeks. O f that mileage, 34.24 miles will be constructed southeasterly from Natron, while the remaining 25.24 miles will be built in a northwesterly direction from Klamath Falls. Bids for the construction o f the Kla math Falls end o f the extension must be submitted on or before June 39. Contractors, however, are allowed until July 19 to submit proposals for build ing the 34 miles o f the track from Na tron, the present northern terminus of the projected road. Local Harriman officials will make no estimate o f the probable cost o f building the two sec tions o f this railroad, but it is believe! the improvement will involve an e x penditure o f approximately $2,225,990, The two extensions, aggregating about 60 miles, for which bids have been asked, cover about one-third o f the length o f the proposed road, which, according to the approved survey, will be 198.6 miles in length from Klamath Falls to Natron. The action o f Harriman in calling for bids for extending this road by be ginning work simultaneously at Na tron and Klamath Falls is accepted as conclusive evidence o f his determina tion to complete its construction. It is figured that to build the 69 miles of track for which bids have been invited will practically exhauBt the appropria tion that has been made for this road for the ensuing year. For that reason additional appropriations for further extensions are looked for next year. There can be no question o f the ulti mate purpose o f Harriman to complete this road between Natron and Klamath Falls. Completion o f the extensions for which proposals have been asked cannot in themselves add materially to the value o f the property. By extend ing the road 25 miles northerly from Klamath Falls, the northern terminus of the southern extension would reach only into the heart o f Klamath county. The construction o f an additional 35 miles southerly from Natron would terminate the road from this end in a mountainous and sparsly settled dis trict. For these reasons it is patent from a practical business consideration that the Harriman interests will complete the road as soon as possible and place the investment on a revenue-earning basis. The primary purpose in project ing this road was to provide for the Southern Pacific a better grade for crossing the state and thereby avoid the more difficult passage now followed over the Siskiyou mountains. When completed, the Oregon Eastern un doubtedly will become the main line for the Southern Pacific between Portland and San Francisco. DRIVE JAPS OFF. Planters Propose Drastic Measures to Prevent Repeated Strikes. Honolulu, June 28.— The work of getting a jury to try five o f the Jap anese strike leaders charged with con spiracy in connection with the strike o f laborers on the sugar plantations be gan today. Sevctal o f the leaders stated today the strike would be resumed on the Ewa and Waialua plantations July 1, when they would again call out 8,000 Japanese who have returned to work. They declare! that all the Japanese in the islands are affiliated in one large organization. Representatives o f ¡the planters de clare that, if the threatened plan o f intermittent strikes on alternate plan tations, enabling those working to sup port the large number on strike, is car ried out, the strikers will be ordered off the plantations. This would mean that the Japanese would have to va cate the homes furnished by the plant ers and would be homeless. The Japanese training squadron is expected here tomorrow. The Planters’ association has receiv ed from its agents at Washington, D. C.. encouraging reports regarding a plan to import efficient labor from Europe through immigration channels. Sugar planters here resent the state ments of a number o f Spaniards who departed from the islands some time since and are reported stranded in San Francisco, where they complained of unfair treatment. The planters de clare that the men were given housi s, lands, wages and other perquisites usually granted to plantation laborers, and that they left against the advice o f the Spanish consul to go to Mexico, lured by false promises.
