The greatest mine di saster in many years in Germany occurred y esterd ay morning at the Radhod mine, abou t three miles from this place. T here was a heavy explosion a t 4 A. M., and a l most immediately the mine took fire. Of 380 miners working under grou nd a t ; the time, only six escaped withou t in jury. T hirty five men were tak en out hadlv hurt mid 37 dead were brought to t iie month of t h e pit. The re m ain ing 302 have been given up for lost. The explosion was unusually violent, destro ying one of the shafts, which had to be p artly repaired before the rescue work was begun. In addition tho flames and smoke proved to be almost insurmou ntable obstacles in tho efforts of tho rescuing parties. A special corps, composed of the men who ren dered such valuable aid in the terrible mine d isa ster at Courriere*, Franco, in March, 1906, arriv ed upon th e scene shortly be fore noon, but wero unable to en ter the mine, being forced to aw ait th e result of the efforts of the firemen to keep t h e flames in check. Meantime hea rtren d in g scenes took place at t h e mine when th e dead and injured were brought to tho surfaeo, and ther e were sim ilar scenes in the town when the injured were transpor ted through th e streets to tho hospitals. At 1 o ’clock th e fire had made great headway, ami later in th e afternoon , a f t e r a consulta tion of tho engineers, it was decided t h a t an y f u rt h e r a t tempts to rescue th e entombed men would be in vain, owing to the impossi bility of en terin g the galleries. At the same time an order was issued to flood the mine. First reports ind icated t h a t the ac cident was the result of an xplosion of coal dust, but th e statemen of tho injured men rend ered this im, ebablo an d it is not clear j u s t w h at caused it.
