San Francisco, July 7.—A braham Ruef was released from the county jail last night on bonds aggregating $1,560,000, the largest am ount ever given in a crim inal case in the state. This sum is the aggregate bail upon 78 indictm ents, returned by the O liver grand jury, charging Ruef with brib ing the form er board of supervisors in connection with the granting of franchises to public service corpora tions, and upon which he was taken in custody by the prosecution as a sort of “prisoner of state,” in charge of an elisor appointed by Judge F rank H. Dunne and a half a dozen private guards, at an expense of about *1000 a m onth. Since January 10, w hen the new adm inistration went into office, Ruef has been languishing in the county jail. T w enty sureties, including R uefs father and sister, and him self, signed the bonds. It developed yesterday during the exam ination of his sure ties before Superior Judge Frank J. M urasky. that Ruef owned real es tatc in this city which he recently transferred to his father and sister, upon which a real estate expert, on the w itness stand, placed a value of $1,095.556. R u efs annual incom e from this property was $76,900. H is father and sister w ent his bonds to the am ount of $690,000, while other sureties q ual ified for $870,000. O f the latter, J o seph Hirsch and Leopold H irsch signed five bonds for $20,000 each, Louis Friedm an six bonds of $20,000 each, and a surety com pany deposited a certified check for $100,000, equiv alent to $ 200,000 in bonds. R uefs next trial has been set for July 15 on one of the indictm ents charging him with bribery in connec tion with the granting of a trolley franchise to the U nited Railroads. A l though he has been in custody for 16 m onths, he has been tried but once, the jury disagreeing after being out 44 hours. A fter leaving court Ruef went to the hom e of lii> parents to join them at dinner, and announced that later he would visit the county jail and bid farewell to the prisoners, and thank them for courtesies shown him.
