New theories of unconiclous selec tion on the p art of man and wife— like m ating with like—as opposed to D arwin’s Idea th at men and women depend upon their perceptive and In tellectual faculties In choosing each other, were propounded by Professor K arl Pearson of University College, London, at the royal Institution. He m aintained th at man has an un conscious tendency to select a wife of his own height, with eyes of his own color, a proportionate span from foretlnger to forearm corresponding to hts own, and a constitution of like physical vigor. These theories he expounded by m eans of tables and diagram s. Among every 1,000 men the color of the eyes Is divided as follows: Blue ....................3611 Hazel ...................127 Green ............... .312Brown ....................34 The eyes of women are generally darker, only 280 of them In every 1,000 having blue eyes. In these blue-eyed people m arried at random, the result would be that they would m ate at the rate of 104 per 1,000: but he had dis covered th at the actual num ber of m arriages per 1,000 of blue-eyed per sons w as 140. or thirty-six above the random average, thus proving th at the blue-eyed man and the blue-eyed wom an are unconsciously attracted toward one another. In the sam e way, men with green ish gray or hazel eyes tend to m arry women with eyes of like color. T he average height of a man he gave as from sixty-seven to sixty-eight Inches and th at of a woman as slxty- two and a half inches, and he contend ed th at the average tall man has a tall w ife and the short m an a short wife. “One could hardly im agine a man choosing a w ife by m easuring her from forefinger to forefinger,” said the professor, yet his diagram s demon strated th at as the span of one In creased so did th at of the other. A like result was produced in the m eas urem ent of thousands of forearm s, his figures showing th at there w as a dis tinct tendency on the p art of men with long forearm s to m arry wives with proportionately long forearm s.—Lon don Mail. Don’t Poison Baby. p'ORTY YEARS AGO almost every mother thought her child must have PAREGORIC or laudanum to make it sleep. These drugs will produce sleep, and A FEW DROPS TOO MANY will produce the SLEEP FROM WHICH THERE IS NO WAKING. Many are the children who have been killed or whose health has been ruined for life by paregoric, laudanum and morphine, each of which is a narcotic product of opium. Druggists are prohibited from selling either of the narcotics named to children at all, or to anybody without labelling them poison.” The definition of narcotic ” is! “A medicine which relieves pain and produces sleep, but which in poisonous doses produces stupor, coma, convul sions and death. The taste and smell of medicines containing opium are disguised, ” and sold under the names of “Drops,” “ Cordials,” “ Soothing Syrups,” etc. You should not permit any medicine to be given to your children without you or your physician know of what it is composed.
