Ann Wing in Tvgh Ox Team Passed Here The citizens of Maupin enjoyed a novel sight Tuesday noon when Mr. and Mrs. J. C; Berrang of Westchester, Conneticut, drove into town with their "prarie schooner" and yoke of oxen. Few living here had ever seen cattle driven to even a plow. Their trip, manner of living and reasons for taking this route to Medford, Oregon, their point of destination, to visit a friend, is like a drama. Mrs. Berrang stated they had Fresh Vegetables and Fruits Lettuce Celery Cranberries Special Prices on Package ROLLED OATS, WHEAT CEREALS, PANCAKE FLOUR AND WHEAT HEARTS' Harris Cash Store The Crandall Undertaking Co. THE DALLES, RED 351 In order that the people living in the southern part of the county who need funeral supplies may make their own selections, we have placed stocks with F. C. BUTLER E. C. PRATT, MAUPIN WAMIC raised the oxen on their Conneti cut farm, 'and due to the poor assurance of spring work after wintering horses, were trained to do the farm work, hence when their home was destroyed by fire, and they started for Medford, the three oxen were in good trim for the journey. Starting December 1st, 1920, six weeks ot the winter were spent in New York, two months of winter of '21-22 in Olney, 111 eight months of '23-23 at Denver where the largest' of the trusty animals was bloated and died The gray horse was purchased in Montpelier, Idaho. , The weight of the entire load is nearly two tons, and that of the two oxen nearly equal the load. Mrs. Berrang explained that our Western pavements are more smooth than that found in the east, and that one-half mile's experience showed them that the oxen would not consent to the Columbia highway route, hence the necessity of humoring the stubborn cattle and favoring the people of Central Oregon with their acquaintance. Sacks had to be used on the front feet of the oxen to get them to return on the half mile of the highway to reach the dirt road. Mr. and Mrs. Berrang have their coveyance equipped, acety lene lights and radio. Expenses of the, trip are defrayed by sale of pictures of themselves and outfit. About eight, ten or twelve miles are realized a day. They will pass through Madras and Bend. I.O. O F. Wapinitia Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hartman visited relatives Sundry in Wap. Last Friday Gotleib Teschners barn caught fire but it was ex tinguished before much damage was done, only a small amount of straw being burned. The farmers up the Pine Grove way have been dragging the road for several days. , 1 The J. L' Parker family visit ed Mr. and Mrs. D. W.
