MENKI A large does of scandal allega tions Isn't supposed to be helpful for anybody. But there are excep tions Ty Cobb and Trie Speaker, for instance. They converted mess of It into two additional years of baseball life and about 1170.000 jroftt. When the 1926 season ebbed to Ha end, Ty took a look at his lege and Tria took a squint or two at tits own pedals and both boys de elded that they had enough of baaebalUng. Both were in com Portable circumstances and it was their feeling that they'd naiher tear loose from diamond combat than go along farther on legs that were buckling under them, arm! that were losing zip and bats that were minus the potency of youth. Then a left hander changed all things! In baseball It 1s the common be lief that a left hander can do any thing eccentric. Nobody ever cornea in contact with a left hand r on tha greenswards of the na tional pastime without taking 1 furtlva look here, another one there, crossing his fingers. Invoking heaven's ble-sing and being etern ally watchful. For left handrs are "Dutch Leonard waa a left i well, they're left handers. hander. Terrible Changes Made "Dutch," running true to loft handed form, knocked the entire baseball world giddy late In 1926 when he charged that Cobb and fipeaker were terrible, terrible peo ple, who gambled and played the boasea and did sundry otber things that were not ethical, grammatical, sanitary or anything that nice re apectanlfl folks should do. It was quite a day, that day when "Dutch" busted forth Into newspaper prose. The explosion that Leonard cre ated came Juat at a time when Cohb and Speaker were announc ing that they were about all done .nd washed up as baseball heroes and henceforth would retire to their vast acres and live peaceful nd contented lives, far, far away from pop bottle throwers, left liandero and hum decisions at the plate and elsewhere. When "Dutch" threw his hat ful of mud. that action altered things considerably. Cobb and Speaker promptly et8rtd the fight to clear their name They sjuo- H' dMi croea .ht pi. All' !! He will Join the San Fran cisco Missions tomorrow In a straight-up trade for two of Red Killefer s players. Koa nuney, catcher, and Ed Rose, outfielder. The deal was executed through telegrams exchanged late today be tween Thomas L. Turner, Beaver prsldent. and William H. McCar thy, chief of the Missions club, af ter Turner had held lengthy tele phone conversation with Bill Rodd ers. Portland skipper. The trade Is effective Immediate ly. All the players have to do to change clubs is ferry across San Francisco bay and report, for the Missions are at home this week and the Beavers are in Oakland. SMALL IN SIZE BUT LARGE IN RESULTS THE CLASSIFIED ADS 2-29-tf ceeded. When the pros and cona of the case were fully aired, It was the conclusion of the baseball pow ers and the public that "Dutch" hadn't done right by Ty and Tris and that both were as pure and unadulterated as the ozone which whips across the Arctic zone. And that's pure stuff, that air, men, and If you don't believe it. you can go up there any morning or evening and take a few sniffs to prove It. Determine to Continue Having established their inno cence, Ty and Tris decided that to i quit ine game then would not be so good. People might talk; they might say that "yes, they were pub licly acclaimed Innocent, but th ain't playing bssehn'l anymore are they, and now what do you make of that, hey?" So Ty and Tris determined to continue playing. Aa soon as they had made their decision two baseball leaders figur. ed that these boys would be great drawing cards, not so much be cause of their playing ability, but uetsuse iney could be rjarsd-vi around aa old-time heroes who naun t neon done right by "Dutch" Leonard: who almost hd h crucified by a left hander; martyr -tun, or something of that sort. So the Senators grahhed Tn. and paid him a salary for 1927 that was reported to be In the icinity of 150.000. Cnnnl. M.v fUZ Ty &r,i hI P"? about i-i,-ivv ior one season.
