S. HAS Possession of what Is probably the oldest automobile in the United States i tho boast of the Armstrong Manufacturing Com pany in Bridgeport, Conn. This pioneer car, built 37 years ago by Charles H. Armstrong, contained many features said to be forerunners of some of the ideas adhered to ' In automobile con struction of the present day. Out of Its crude design are said to have been developed the self starter, braking system on hubs and shafting, three speeds forward and reverse, and a scheme of ef ficient air cooling in use today in airplane manufacture. The old car is built largely of steel. It possesses its own shock absorbers and is equipped with an electric starter and magneto. WASHINGTON. Co-operative gasoline and oil stations are a com paratlvely new phase of the co-operative movement in the United States, according to a survey by the bureau of labor statistics of the department of labor. The de velopment has taken place mainly in Illinois, Nebraska and Minnesota. An article In agricultural co operation states that In the past two years 19 farmers' co-operative oil stations have been set up in Illinois. In 'most cases each of these stations serves a whole coun ty; they do not aa a rule have service-pump stations, but make de liveries direct to the farm by truck, Stock Issued Two kinds of stock are issued common stock of no par value. Is sued to farm bureau members only, ownership of which carries with it the right to vote in the organiza tion and to participate In the dis tribution of patronage dividends, and preferred stock, ranging In the various organizations from $25 to $100, carrying the right to vote and to a dividend of from 6 to S. per cent, but no right of participa tion In patronage dividends. ' Fourteen of these local associa tions have their own central pur chasing organizations, the Illinois Farm Supply Co., which began business April 1, 1927. The central company Is managed by a board of nine directors elected by delegates from the county or ganizations. Its sales up to Decem ber 1, 1927. consisted of 261 car loads of gasoline, 138 carloads of kerosene, 37 carloads of lubricat ing oils, 48,236 pounds of grease, and 2.471 gallons of denatured al cohol.
