Conlee's reference in lost Sunday's Register to Mother Shlpton's prophecy reminded mo of an English newspaper of 1I4 which my grandfather had, pre served on. account of a similar prophecy. It had oome Into my father's possession a good many years ago and soma 20 years ago I ran acroe it in looking over some old papers that had been bundled together and, being attracted by the partial. fulfillment of the prophecy, j tveked him for tt and he gave It tome. For some time I was qui to Impressed with It and redd and re read. It. but after i time I laid, It away and' had not thought of; it for years until last Sunday. After some little search I found the paper, yellow and brittle with age, -but still very, readable and J here present a copy: ' A JUBetAltKABLB PROPHECY '. ' Many people who have read "Tha Skeleton In Armor,"- by the American poet Longfellow, know that It- waj founded upon the discovery of a skele ton, chad la rusty armor, near an old alone twer In Newport, R- 1M U. 8. The Professor discovered . that tt was written In the Norse language and .placed ita date aa about, tha, llth century. His translation follo'wa: 'To Valhalla I am going aeon and glad ly will I go. Now I feol my power, Is falling and I will soon be gone. . nut thla will be secreted before tomor - row'a- dawn." . -Am no rort of this prophecy liad been fulfilled at the- time that tt wan printed. I suppose that it was soon forgotten by most of the people that read it. but. read in the light of our present knowledge, it certainly appears to be a remark able prediction. - Now the facts about Mother Shipton's prophecy' (and any one may discover them by referring to any good encyclopaedia) are these: The prophecy was supposed to have baan made in 1414, accord ing to Mr. Conlee's article, and the dato is substantially correct, but as a matter of fact the earliest date thnt the scholars can find nny rec ord of her prophecy whs 1841 whn The rrophoele of Jlotner unipton was published In London by an I Its fame; because It foretold tho aenttn ol t-arauiai ivotoj furred In 1530. It Is evldont them that It wns very wonderful If writ ten In 1414, but very cominonplacs If written in 1841, as It no doubt wns. The prophecy has been re printed many times with many ad ditions, but all of courso having the ancient dato. In 1882 one Charles ttlnriley re- ftrinted what was purported to bs a ife of Mother flhlpton. He In serted some doggerel verso of Ills own in which he prophecled tho end of mo world In 1X81. It is ovideni that If the reference in tha cur rent effusion to 1028 had been In existence at that time that he wmilit nnf hnvn titn.fe. the hlunrlMr of claiming 1881 as the date of the final blowup. I am willing to make a small wager that the paper from which Mr. uoniee tooK trill prophecy is not more than twenty years old and. If it really contains that verse referring o 1938, I am willing to gamble that It is not five years old. If tt were possible to get at the facts. I am satisfied that one would find that every prophecy in It that has tteen fulfilled was written alter It was practically assured. It Is not difficult to prophesy the end ot tha world. It has been dona times without number and every proph ecy has had Its followers. Only a lltue over a year ago quite a num ber of people got out on the hills with their nighties on waiting for Gabriel to blow his trumpet. In the Oregonian of March 12, 1922) there was a full column, front page article headed: "Violent Quakes Coming; Submerging of Much of Europe Predicted; Mfircp Is Month set: Dr. Milton AiDeri Nobles Says United States Shaken, But Not Wiped Out." After four years the only pan of that that has come true is that the good oia United States not wiped out. Every Sunday -newspaper, nearly, has a story of some seer that has foretold something that has come to pass, but strange to relate you never hear of the prophecy till after the fulfillment. Now as to this old Norse proph ecy of mine that I quoted in the beginning. It is. In the parlance of the times, the bunk. 1 made the whole thing up while I was sitting around resting, but I claim that It is Just as good prophecy and a whole lot better poetry than that credited to Mother Shlpton. However, my idea Is not merely to run a hoax, but I do want to register a kick against all. thia prophesying of disaster for, though it Is a joke to a great many. It Is a very serious matter to lots of chil- ?ren and credulous, nervous people, know of people that as children went to bed nightly In the mortal fear that the world would come to a terrible end ere morning and I know of people right- here in the enlightened city of Eugene who feel that the time is so short that any preparation for the future, educa tiomtl or otherwise. Is useless. One mother said that she didn't care wbether her children went to school or not for time was so short that ah education would do .them no good.
