Corwin, director of the Odd Fel low's band who will also direct the junior band. I'"' Mr. Corwin says that those wish ing- to' join the band will be given fi tent and assitmed to their proper places. He asks that players of wind instruments only report tonight and says that parents and friends are Invited. Mr. Corwin states that tho age limit will be 18 years and that all over that a?e are eligible to join the' Odd Fellow's band. He said that already he has the names of 25 boys and girls who are desirous of becoming members and that he hopes to build up a junior organiza tion of musicians that will be a nucleus for a band that some day will be second to none In the country. C. jpixon, manager of tho Booth Kelly Lumber company, last night gave a talk before the Uound Tublu club, his topic being "from the first tree to the last." .Mr. Dixon sketched tho evolution of trees and explained the theory of their beginning, taking up also phases ot development that includ ed fruit and shade trees. Conservation nnd flro protection, coupled with educative measures, formed the main theme of his talk. The proper use, and quick use of the older trees, was urged by the speaker, who explained, this stand by recalling the fact that these older trees will in time be too de cayed for commercial value. It Is better to cut them nnd use them now than to allow them to stand while they are really in a process of decay which will eventually mean complete loss. . The use of substitutes for lumber has cut into the industry, he said, and called attention to the lack of conservation by operproductlon and competition. Mr. Dixon urged the use of nil parts of the trees in the various kindred industries. The speaker decried the idea prevalent in some parts of the United States that there Is a dangerous shortage of trees. "There nre plenty of trees for this generation, and as far as w- can see Into the future with proper reforestation methods," he said. Taxation and the problems of regulated production were touched on and some reference was made to the tmrk-McNary forestry bill. ioo.iany loung Trees Hit On the conservation Question, into which Mr. Dixon delved extensively, ne pointed out the fact that too many of the younger trees wero being cut while not enough atten tion was being paid to the proper selection from time to time of the trees that had ripened and were ready to be cut. Speaking of the idea of the short age of trees, he pointed out that statements to the contrary, Oregon still had plenty of forests which were doomed 20 years ago by pub lic sneakers and writers who for some selfish motive gave out er roneous information. The Sherman anti-trust measure and simitar laws -In on way de- lerrea ine development of proper conservation of timber, he inti mated, by not permitting the lum- oermen or ine country to get to gether and say how much they would produce or how little. Donahue of tho Eu gene hospital clinic has returned from five weeks in the East where he spent most of his time studying at the Mayo clinic In Rochester, Minn. He reports., that there are practically no new developments in the treatment of malignant growths. The pendulum is swing ing more and more toward fulgur at'on (electric cautery) and radi cal surgery, he said. Radium and deep X-Ray therapy is being used chiefly on cases that are not op erative, or are not accessible to fulguratlon.
