ROSEBURG, Ore., Dec. 7. A
tailoring shop, owned by J. H.
Bernier was badly damaged late
last night by a fire started to cover
uv a robbery. Thieves broke down
the rear door of the building and
with an auger bored notes around
the locks of intervening doors, so
that they could reach the front
part of the building, where they
stole five suits of-clothes and 19
suit lengths of bolt goods.
Boxes of trimmings, kindling
and papers were then piled up In
two parts of the frame building
and a fire started. Fortunately,
however, the blaze was quickly
discovered and extinguished before
any great amount of damage was
'done. -
Tracks found in tho nlleyway In
the rear of the building Indicated
that there had been two automo
biles backed up to tho shop. A
few minutes before tho fire, two
cars wero seen to come out of tho
nlleyway and go south at a rapid
rate of speed.
Officers are today investigating
a report that two men stopped at
a roadside stand yesterday nnd en
deavored to sell suit goods. It is
possible. Sheriff Starmer says, that
the theft and fir wero tho work
of thieves who havo been commit
ting; a scries of like crimes.

morning.
After his conviction and sen

pleaded that he was suffering
from on Incurable malady and had
Sheriff Hawkins remove him to
the hospital, about six miles from
the city. At the hospital, Lewis
was not under lock and key, and
was permuted to come and go as

"1 told Sheriff Hawkins that I
had no place to lock tho man up,"
declared Superintendent Fryrear
of the hospital.
"Oh, Ted's all right, he wont
run 'away,' Fryrear quotes Sheriff
Hawkins as replying to him.
Lewis was serving a 60-duy sen

He had served less than two weeks
of his sentence.
It also was learned that Lewis
during the past week sold his
