XEVER! , i A recent story In the' paper con veys the mors or less Interesting Information that Pullman car por ; ters in Canada are scckinc a wage adjustment that will enable them to get along without' tips.' This agi tation, one learns, Js based not upon ' ' a false pride that rebels at acccpt - anco of gratuities, but upon the alleged fact that the traveling pub lie Is growing tighter year by year. Aside from commercial travelers, for whom the pain of tipping Is . eased by that comfortable Institu tion ltnown colloquially as the ' scandal sheet, the Canadian por ters assert that a wave of economy seems to have hit those who ride In sleepers. So. they ' say, they must have more wages or starve. . In this situation a few hopeless optimists think they see the germ r :of a movement that will- ulllmatcly ,:do away with tipping altogether, "teubstitutlng for It a wage adequate ' to . jiieet ,lhs employe's needs. . "'Hopeless optimist" Is an exceed- lngly mild . and complimentary term for those who., hold , such views. "Chuckle-headed -idiot' ' would be 'nearer the exact truth. Tipping will never be done away With for the simple reason that Ihe world Is full of nincompoops whose little, souls are comforted amazing ; ly by the act of tipping. They are ; unimportant cogs, for the most part. In the world's big machine, . and It gives them pleasing delusions of grandeur to lay down a tip and receive the deferential thanks :of the experienced tippee. "That Is about the only way they can ever hope to receive much in the way'of deference, and they do hot pro pose to give It up. i.;-. The tlppibg evil If it Is .an evil Is Infinitely worse In the East ', than In the West. ' iSack there .'a. 5 ; tip Is expected for every kind of , ' service that is given. One tips the . barber who shaves him, find then : t he tips the pirate who, kept his coat 4 and hat while lifts, shiving was be- ' ' ing done, hcn'hd'tlps the African . chief who brushes his clothes as he walks out and steps over to the wash room and tips the boy who hands him a towel when he washes : his hands. And so on through the : wholo scheme of daily life. The easterner likes it He loves the temporary deference that the . act of tipping wins . for. . .him. It makes him feel as if he amounted ' to something and he wouldn't give It up for tho world. It Is said on ; good authority that the reason the cafeteria failed of success .back East is that there are bo waiters to tip, and so the easterner, simply went elscwhero to do his eating. Tipping in the. West Is not ah In , stitution as it is on the eastern ' coast, but anyone even out here ' i who talks of doing away with the tipping evil is spilling a lot of fu tile conversation through his hat ' Tipping exists, and continues thrift ily to exist age after age, not be cause of ,a charltablo belief that the i rociplont of the tip needs the money , .but becauso of tho feeling of per ' . sonal importance the feudal con descending of superior to Inferior that is Induced by tho giving of . the tip. . IN JUSTICE TO HINDENBIRG It Is worth sotting down, as an interesting bit of history and as a matter of human justice, that old Hlndenburg has fooled the world In peace more than he did in war. When the grim pld field marshal was chosen president ot Germany, nearly overybody, including this .writer, took. It as' a virtual restorar lion of the monarchy. Hlndenburg was known as a representative of lhe monarchists, the conservatives the" Junkers, the militarists He had never made any secret ot hit attitude. , . . The German royalists plucked up new hope. The rest of the world nearly lost hope. Prance had heart failure. Illndenburg's pledge to rule as a "constitutional president of the German republic" was dis counted. It was feared that tho lloheniotlerns might soon be bark. At boat, observers looked for a new reign of hate and an Interminable period of bickering In Europe, with Germany Quarreling ' with Krance and resisting ever)' attempt to en force the peace treaty. But Hlndenburg has kept hit word. He has stood for the Lo carno treaties, for a new and friendly understanding with France. I for co-operation with the allies In re-shaping Europe, for disarm-j amcnt all around, for opposition to tho monarchy, for a genuine op portunity for democracy in Ger many. With the signing of the Locarno treaty In London, the allied and as sociated world may well tip Its hat to that gruff old soldier and as a level-headed statesman, a man of honor and a fairly good sport BEHIND AMERICA Paul Loebe, president ot the Ger man retchstag, sees Europe "hope lessly lagging behind America and unable ever to catch up again. That Is the Impression he gained in a recent visit to this country. 'Ho attributes our lead to Amer ica's "gigantic technical develop ment" and Its capacity !or business organisation. These are character istics in which' Americana were accustomed, before the world war. to regard Germany1 as the leade. American ability to do business In a big, organized way assuredly has gone beyond German capacity. This was probably Inevitable. But it was Germany's rash plunge Into the big war adventure that gave America her present primacy lu this field, by setting Germany back when she was at her best With peace and Intensified effort Germany and the rest of Europe may regain their lost ground, but It Is hardly conceivable that they will ever catch up to America again In Industry and prosperity.. ' A Chicago wife wants a divorce because, she says, her deaf mute husband swore at her with his fingers. Fingering a rolling pin suggestively, we would say, would have been the proper retort In that case. Eleven letters written by Ben jamln Franklin have been sold at auction for $2900. If the great apostle Of' thrift could have fore seen that he would have contracted a severe case of writer's cramp. - The correspondents are pro claiming sadly that Kip and Alice can't live together now. Perhaps, though, they haven't read the sen sational papers and don't know how bad they are. They're resourceful devils down in Florldf, and the chances are that after that 14-lnch rain all the Miami landlords got out 'signs reading "rooms with private bath.' Prospective husbands will note with apprehension that rifle prac tice for co-eds has . been started over at Corvallls. , .; ' Early Days In Eugene f From the Morning Register, . - ' December 2, 1906) . Thnt first day ot thanks giving In the Plymouth colony was set aside by Governor Brad ford in gratitude for tho sa fe gar nering of the WJomsoopnANa r:ch harvest the Pilgrims so sadly needed. The men of the colony were sent out for wild turkeys. The woman made the ple and prepared the vegetables. The children found tho cranberries. Their combined of fotts resulted in tho meal which became the standard and model of all Thanksgiving duy dinners since. Improved methods of farming irrigation, better tools, selected seeds, scientific fertilization, and advanced methods of conservation have raised man above tho dungers ot drought and famine. Modern transportation and cold storage have placed at man's dis posal the fruits, vegetables and flesh products of the world. Sociological studios with the re moval of the essential causes of poverty, have Improved social con ditions and made It posslblo for al most every family to have soma of the luxuries as well as the neces sities of life. We take It for granted now that every year shall be a year of abun dant harvest, and every dny a day of abundant food for the Individual and tho family. Tho original Incen tive for a special day of thanks giving operates no more. It Is no longer a question of sufficient food. Indeed, there has come a time when man must bo taught what not to eat and how to control his nppetite for food. To my mind, tho particular thing In this generation for which we should thank AlmlKhty God. is the advancing knowledge ot how to live. Too long hn man made a play thing Of his body. Ho has put Into his stomach anything his palato craved. He has smoked, drunk, gorged, abused his body, given way to his sordid paasiona neglected his teeth, mistreated his kidneys and liver in reality, ho has made a plaything of his body. . On this Thanksgiving day I thank God that the public and the indi vidual are becoming educated as re gards hearth. They are learning what to eat and when to eat. They are learning and 1 observing the simple rules ot health. The body Is the temple of tho soul It. may bo said to be God's temple. I thank Clod man Is learn ing to respect God by guarding His temple. That Is my Thanksgiving day thought. I Answers to Health Queries I $ 4 ' R.- Q. I cannot sleep at night.
