Lloyd murdered a. tajticab driver on the hlchway near Inde pendence and stole his car. He ex. plained later that he wanted an an. tomoblle and that that on the whole, seemed the easiest way to set it. He was caught, tried and convicted, and since he had neither money nor friends and there was nothing- about him to appeal to mushy sentimentality he was hanged In the prison yard at Salera on November SO, Just three months after the commission of his crime. His case is so unusual that It de serves comment. It was not inti mated that he was insane. It does not appear even that he shot in self defense. There was no bitter legal battle, with long delays and frequent appeals. The public seems actually to have felt some pity for his poor victim. Instead of lavishing ail Its sympathies, as is customary, on the killer. There appears to have been on the part of those connected with the trial only a sincere desire to get at the truth as to his guilt or innocence and to fix a penalty in accordance vl the crime. . j The result, as already stated, Is that only three months elapsed be- j the mala to the other holiday trimmings. When the purchase Is made, pro. coed to use the stamps so that other people, too, will become fa miliar with them and will buy them. The purchase of Christmas seals helps to spread nntl-tuberculosia educational work. It carries a little farther every year the message of health and the knowledge of sani tation and hygiene. The doctrine of sunshine and fresh air, the ounce of prevention that saves the life of many a young ster, the hope of cure, these tilings and more are the mission of the Christmas seals and of the people who buy and use them. HOME SCIENCE FOB. HOYS Training in home management should be given to boys as well as girls. That la a theory dear to the heart of Mrs. Anna I Burjlck of Washington, D. C, federal director of work among girls and women in Industry. "Limiting a mana conception of the home-making business to fix ing the electric fuses and building an occasional chicken coop on Sat urday afternoons, is not preparing him to found a well-rounded fam lly life. "While mothers and fathers do not have exactly the same reapon slbilitles toward their children, they certainly have responsibilities that are equal in importance. If we train girls to be efficient mothers. we should certainly train boys to be worth-while fathers." Mrs. Burdlck is not pleading that a boy should be taught to sew and bake and scrub, although it wouldn't hurt a young man to know- how such Jobs should be tackled any more than it would hurt a young woman to know how to fix the electric fuses and do a little simple carpentering and plumbing in emergencies. But everything from budgeting the family finances and maintaining the family health to disciplining the children an 'keeping the domestic machinery running smoothly would be better handled If both parents understood all the problems involved and ap predated the need of co-operation. The public received no confused Impression that may be, after all, the accused murderer was more sinned against than sinning and that perhaps he was a noble but misunderstood charac ter. The extremely valuable lesson Is taught that punishment follows crime, that the arm of the law is long and that the way of the trans. gressor is hard. We have an idea an odd idea. probably, in these modern times that If all murderers were dealt with in this oddly unsentimental but extremely Just and businesslike manner there would . be . lewer killings and much less tearful taT about what we are coming to. The murder record of this country something frightful to contemplate. It would be far less frightful In a few years it punishment were prompter and surer. POETIC JUSTICE The outstanding result of the salacious and widely read Rhine lander annulment suit is that an ancient and once honorable name has been dragged at great length - and with great show through the mud. , Because or this dragging, we should say, no tears are to be shed As a matter of fact, the procesr has accomplished a rude but poetic sort of Justice. The Rhinelanders set out to save their precious name and their Immaculate standing by annulling a marriage that seems to have been at least the amend hon orable for a great deal of dishonor, and the mess that followed may be properly regarded as their Just compensation for attempting to do something contemptible. There is a tradition that Justice lis blindfolded, and It appears fre quently enough that she truly Is. But in this case she must have pulled the bandages far enough aside to have been able to see the essential facta in the case. At any rate, the Rhinelanders have got what was coming to them, OimiSTMAS SEALS While buying your bright Christ. mag ribbons and festive cards, don't forget the Christmas aeal that Is helping to stamp out tuberculosis. Diseased teeth ami tonsils, chron ic nasal catarrh, chronic bronch itis, a running ear, or other pus in fection may te followed uy an Intcstionnl Infection. When tills occurs, diarrhea Is likely to appear. The thing I want to make clear is that chronic, diarrhea is not a disease, really, but rather Is a symp tom of a run down condition. Ihls statement will make clear that in Its treatment, first consideration must be given to building up the general heulth. It Is easy to say this. Isn't it? But what a Job it la to build up the general health! it means weeks ami months of intelligent effort. It means changing the habits of a lifetime and doing things which are distasteful in the beginning. I was thinking the other day. about a piece of advice I frequently give business men about not hav ing luncn In the oirice or piaco or business. If this has been your prnctice you Just dread going out to a public place to cat. You hato the noise and clatter, the hum or conversation and the very smell or a restaurant. Yet this sort of a change, much as It grates on you. may do you good, it makes you think new thoughts. It gets you out of & rut. But, of course, this has nothing tn do with the ilet in chronic dlur- Thea. it Is merely an indication of the changed lire one must lead to shake off chronic disability of an other nature. In chronic diarrhea the food must be selected with a view to es caping Intestinal Irritation. Fibre and husk must be avoided. Every thing eaten should be strained through a fine collander. The outer covering may be so harsh and Irri tating at to do harm. Celery, peas, beans, cabbage, spinach and other -valuable vege tables are harmful in this condi tion. If eaten without special prep aration. The capsule, or skin and the fibre act as scrub brushes to the intestinal walls. This U de sirable in health, but must be avoided to permit the healing of inflamed intestinal walls. Buttermilk and acidophilus milk are desirable additions to the diet. They help to free the bowel of the frerms of fermentation. 4 I Briefs of Oregon Life Light trafric was permitted Sat urdnv for the Ilrsl lime over tll eolith end nutlet of Oregon Clly on the ruolrlo liimtwnv.
