Bernlce Nelson, formerly - a
teacher of English at the local
high school, was a visitor today
and addressed the assembly. Miss
Nelson is now- teaching at the
Union high school in the- Hood
River valley, and says that the
schools are now dismissed while
the students are helping to harvest
the apple crop for which that val

John Bushman, of the Spring

at the high school this morning.
Mr. VanKlrk's subject was "The
Future and. International Peace."
He eeemed to be well informed
and had many forceful arguments.
He spent 18 years of his life in
the study of international affairs,
attended the first meeting of The
Hague, and the first meeting of
the league 'of nations, and'was
present at the International peace
conference called by President
Harding at Washington;
The speaker knew Mr. Harding
personally and expressed a deep

a glowing tribute to Woodrow Wil
son, ranking him with the world's

of air-fixing nitrate plants, with
largo quarries und as an adjunct to
these plums in order to supply
power pending tho completion of
the watorpower plant a steam
plant was erected miles away on
the Wttrrior river,, known as the
Gorgas plant.

The total expenditures on these
properties was about S10S.OOu.000
of which less than $5,000,000 was
spent upon this isolated and tern
oorary steam plant. Tho steam
plant was erected on the property
of the Alabama Power company
which reserved title to tho land on
agreed conditions with tho Wilson
administration for which this nu
ministration in not renponslbln and
which gave to them tho right to
j purchase the Oorgas steam plnnt.
'The proposal mndo by Mr. I'ova
for the purchase of this entire
equipment involved tho payment
by him of 15,000.000 for the en
tire plant, including; the above and
Isolated temporary steam plant.
They also involved many other
conditions with regard to the com
pletion of the waterpower, etc. No
disposal of. government property
can rightfully bo made by nny nil
ministratlve officer without the
approval of congress, nnd I as tho
responsible officer in this mattor
referred Mr. Ford s offer to con
gress, which has so far not acted
upon It.
"In the meantime, tho Alnhnmn
Power company, under their right
in the old contract, notified tho
government that the lands must be
vacated on or before October 15,
this year. They offered tO pny
93,600,000 for this comparatively
small Item of the whole equipment.
"The government hnd an option
to accept this offer which was the
highest made, or to salvnge this
plnnt as second-hnnd machinery
and from which they could not
have realized more than Jl.,000.-
000. On tho other hand it must be
borne in mind that for this single
item in the entire equipment the
government hns secured $.1,500,000
as against $5,000,000 offered by
Mr. Ford for the entire plant and
equipment.
