The first rain In a month be

The heavy wind that blew

to get It under cover. Farmers
usually read correctly, tho rain

Tho rain will have a tendency to
cause the Italian prune to cracx

Lano county. Tho prune harvest
has barely been started but the
growers havo been gathering to

Leveling of the old grade of tho
Kugeno-Klnmath Fall line of the
nuutnern j'acillo, extending from
a point a mile above Oukridge, to
it point six miles up Salt creek,
will be started In a very short time.
according to Oscar Ellis, Southern
Pacific engineer from San Diego,
Cul., who wia hero yesterday.-
Mr. Mills said that' he will soon
get together a crew of men with
teams and equipment to do. this
work and that It la exnecteii that
Iha company Boon will lay rolls a,!
" eiwio in uuut in oruwr
to facilitate the work of construc
tion on this slda of the' summit.
Mr. Kills said he had no Informa
tion ns to when contract will be
let for west side construction, but
expected that the work would be
started early next year and crew
would bo working on both sides
of tho mountains. "
Tri es and Brush on GrtMfa
Tho rails woro laid on tho old
grade as far as the Salmon creek
bridge a mile above Oakiidge be
fore construction operations
ceased 12 years ago. The grade
wo built six mile further on but-
during thoso 12 years tree and
brush have grown up on it and
slide of earth and rock from the
mountain above havo partially
clogged It. Most of the way the
grade ha been used as a county
road to McCredle Springs and a
new roud to-this resort will have
to be built. The survey ot the
railroad extends within a few rods
of the hotel at the springs.
Engineer Ellis said that' the
work which he ha been Instruct
ed to do will not require a great
number ot men or teams but that
on new grading contracts, which
he expects will be under way early
next year, he looks for - several
thousand men to be employed. Of
fices are expected to be established
in Eugene and construction work
on this side directed from here.
Meain Much to Eugene)
"Construction work alone Is go
ing to mean much to Eugene," said
the engineer. "Thousands of la
borers -will pass through this city
and will spend much of their
money here, while the new rood is
being buift. But this Is only a
'drop In the bucket' a compared
with the benefit that will accrue
to Eugene when the line 1 In. op
eration." ...
. Mr. Ellis had oharge of the con
struction of the grade above Oak
ridge when It was first built and he
wild yesterday that he had a sense
of satisfaction In being assigned to
the duty of finishing it. .
