STARS TIE (By The A so da ted Frean) Hotfrwood and San Francisco, two of the moat powerful baseball clubs In the JBirfc Coast league, placing their chief faith In battery and pitch ing strength, stood at the bead of the league today. In a tie with 61 won and 35 lost aa the record for each In the second half of the split season. The Mission Iteds, a constant threat to the first place club, lurked In third rank. The SUra went back Into first place by splitting a double header with Los Angeles. They came from behind with a four-run rally in the eighth to capture the opener 0 to 4, but were squelched thoroughly In the nightcap which turned up a 15 to 7 victory for the Angels. Both games were played at Wrigtey field, Los Angeles. Only the fact that the Seals had won three straight up to yesterday from the Mission Keds at .Recreation Park, kept that club In the battle for first place against Hollywood. The Missions turned the tables by de feating the league leaders 3 to 2. Tho Indiana dropped another to the Oakland club in the northern camp, tho battle ending 5 to 2, and giving the Oaks three victories to one for the Redskins. Craghead was almost Invincible. Portland took both halves of a don bleheadnr from Sacramento in the north. The Ducks swam to an easy 10 to 4 victory In the first and made It 4 to 8 In the afternoon. In both games, the Portlanders came from behind. Sacramento rolled up a four run advantage In tbe first contest only to lose it in tbe third Inning, while In the night cap, the visitors scored all their runs before the Ducks brought their first runner across the plate. Friday nigbt at tne armory be &layed Bobby Samson's own game, and eat the Pacific coast welterweight champ in 34 minutes with four conse cutive butts, a,n airplane spin and s body slam. Samson was unable to re sume the match after the rest period. Whether the two grajkplera thought they were Sonnenbergs or merely had an overdose ot goat j; land a could not be definitely ascertained, anyway the crowd, a cood one for the first match of the fal lseaaon, was treated to some high-powered "oiliygo&t tac tics. They used "the old bean" from start lo finish. Bobby came to tile mat weiebina 147 pounds, and Pete strolled on with lod pounds of beef. The sun tanned Caiifornian shook Eugene's hope with a flying tackle soon after tbe opening. He tried It again and aprawledon the canvas. Pete wasn't there. " After a few more hit and miss trials, a few step-over arm locks and such. Pete put a leg split on Bam con. A few well directed knuckles ran ud and down the Wildcat's spinal column ana tnat noia no longer interested i ere. men ton owed a series ol playful tickles from both contenders. bam son seemed to improve as time went on and managed to get a double toe hold on the Wildcat. Bobby, equat ing on his rival's back, seemed pleased with the world in general. Pete s rub ber legs kept him from slapping the mat. Gettinz clear of the toe hold. Pete went Into-his famous twistings and contortions that gave him his name and nothing but flying arm sand legs were visible from the sidelines for a (ew momenta. The most painful hold of the even ing followed this wild toray at about toe aio-minute period, a punishing leg split with Wildcat as the recipient. It had Pete worried, but he wormed out of It. Pete turned himself Into a human battering ram. Three well-placed butta extracted the wind from Sam son. Another half butt snd Pete hoist ed the Caiifornian to his shoulders and started an airplane spin. It lasted a couple of rounds, and Pete, seeming to realize that Samson was already cut, rained his burden from his shoul ders and slammed him to the mat. bam son was carried from the ring. Durina the rest oeriod trainers and doctors worked on Samson, whose muscles tn his left shoulder were dis torted from the fall from the hisrh altitude. Ue was unable to return to the mat and the second fail was for feited. Both men were culto evenlv match ed with Samson having a slight edge on rete in strength, ah tilings con sidered, It was a good, clean, fast bout. Firi Ware and Del Avery, both of Eugene, went 10 mlnates of a sche duled 80-mlnuto preliminary with Wore taking the bout. This was their first appearance as professional grap plers. K- rens Jot piano tuning To St. Mary's Grid Team With aeven lettermen which includes almost all the backfield and both tackles, Coach Dan Moran, of St. Mary's school in Eugene, has little to worry about for the coming grid sea son. Even at that, all of St Mary's pig skin artists are not back at school yet, and Coach Moran will have a good addition to his Bquad, which is zpected to number at least 25 next week. Last year's veterans back- on the job are Millard WUbelm, center; Geo. Oetty, half; Henry Nury, fullback; Henry Pape, guard; Bob O'Reilly, tackle; Frank Grenler, tackle and Joe Berjr, quarter. Another hope of Coach Moran Is a 160-nound man who is expected to arrive from Washington soon. From By FRAXBT G. GORRIE t Associated Press Sports Writer) The University of Oreeon football team hasn't many, weaknesses but the one which stands out most of all is its lack of reserve strength. John J. ilehwar, like all other coaches, is endeavoring to build a championship machine and barring in juries may accompusn tne men tnia year. Coach Mctiwan will be able to sena an all-exrjerienced eleven on the field of battle but will be hard pressed for capable substitutes in cases of an emergency, especially at the guard and taenia poatuous. The probablo lineup against Pa cific University next Saturday in Eu gene will be btadelmau, center; Lillle and Shields, guards; Colbert and Christensen, tackles; Archer and Wood, ends; Kitzmiller, quarterback; Aloe Lie r, fullback ant Alaann and Donohue, halfbacks. Charles Williams. a negro veteran, may get tbe call over Donohue if he recovers suffic iently from a tonsil operation. All have had varsity experience except Moeller, who was out of school last year but who Is considered an "ace In the hole" by McEwan. Other than this powerful combina tion, the Oreuon coach has little to draw from. By that I mean the quarterback keeps the opposition guessing as to what play or type of play is coming next. After you find what works best then you can hew to that line. Even better is to mix 'em up with a certain play. Stanford has one such for today's onenluar en me with West Coast Army. It's a mighty trouoiesome anajr to stop, it starts as a run and winds up with' a pass and you can't tell which it will be. The ball Is snapped to No. 3, who atarta around his own right end with three backs and the two guards as interferon. Note that each man has a special duty and that nnne are as signed to take the opposing left end, although his territory is to be at tacked. The idea here is to remove this vulnerable man without wasting an interferer on him. That gives you extra men to take out the other de fensive players. The defensive left end will come tearing at No. 3. Just as he is going to knock him for n mil of goals. No. 8 lobs a little pass to No. 2, ahead of bim. And No. 2 is off for a run off tackle with bis two guards to clear a path for him. (Copyright, 1920. Publishers Syndi cate) : Ty Cobb hasn't seen a big league ball game all year.
