The dealer wasted no money in paper bass. The young nvnn tucked the news-iwiper-wriipped bundle under his arm and went baok to his room. He had been illy nourished for weeks, so he climbed the four flights of stairs slowly. In his room he set about prepar ing his frugal lunch. A baunua and a kIhhh of milk. Verba p he would get a job that day, or the next. It bad been a long lane he'd been WRnderlng down. Jobs had marked tt like milestones. Jobs that he rould not hold because a face with soft browu eyes and tender lips intruded itself between his eyes nnd the pages of his ledgers. Figures and memories did not mix in book keeping. One kindly boss had told htm to take a course In concentration. The trouble was that he concentrated too deeply, but not upon his work. Once he bud been out of a job for weeks and his money had gone entirely be fore he found another, a temporary place, special work. Ho had gone hungry then. And he had not eaten a solid meal since, even when he was employed. It proved to be ft sound idea, because it enabled him to ent the other half of the time. That is to any. he was without work as often as be had it. Hut he waa never down to his last penny again. There was one Job on which he seemed to be making good, when he was served with papers In divorce iroceedings. .then he slipped bacR nto the habit that had cost him his earlier positions. He fell to dream ing or neruo ixtu. Ho waa always thinking of her. Even now when, his lunch over, he started to peruse the male help wanted columns of the newspaper that had been wrapped about the bananas, There waa not Inns tor htm. lied have to start the round of the em ployment agencies again; Ills eye wandered from the last help-wanted column to the next. It waa houses for sale. Here was one in Moonfields. Wasn t that the place he had gono to with Iter tie Lou? Sure It was. He rend on with awnkened Interest. The ad vertisement intrigued him. It didn't sound at all like a regular ad. ' AU about a house that had been built too lato for the owner to bo happy In It. And only happy people wore asked to coma and see it. Rod It waa Rod, of course read It twice, put It down and later read It again, it was a amy an, sort or. A sideshow trick of someone, he sur mised. Why not go and ace tnla house that was advertised An hour later he waa on train, with a return tr n ticket to Moon fields In his Docket.
