"What good would a half -million be to me if I was killed?" Gene coun tered when newspapermen queried him about the policy. "I think the nroDosition is siiiv." nam prevented tne cnampion iron working out yesterday. Air oort men are inclined to favor wood airplane hangars instead of steel hangers, Charles Pledger, commission er of nublic utilities of Spokane, Wash., stated when discussing plans and estimates for the new airplane hangar planned for Spokane, accord ing to word received by the West Coast Lumber bureau Plans are being made for a hangar with at least a 200-foot frontage and 100-foot depth, which .is expected to cost about f,UW. "For some time we have been In vestigating the type and probable coat of oonstruction," Mr. Hedger said. "Amangar of wood is being con sidered. The exnerience of airport men has been that in tease of fire hangar fires usually are con lined to one plane the heat rising toward the roof causes steel girders to buckle. Wood may char, but it usually can be extinguished before serious damage is caused. Timbers used in airplane hangar construction are treated with a preparation which increases their fire resistance. Airport engineers have found also, according to the bureau, that the han gar of lumber construction, employ ing as It does a material readily avail able in all localities, and used famil iarly by building craftsmen through out the country, makes for economy. It Is uniformly cheaper to build, en gineers say, easier to heat thorough ly durable if constructed according to sound practice and more resistant to high winds .and enrthquake effects than most other structural types. INSURE WITH HENRY TROMP, AS BEST LOSERS (By The Associated Press) When it comes to lostnjr streaks. Burt Shotton'i futile Phils can give any team in the National league. In cluding the Boston Braves, aces and spades and still have better than an even chance of victory. No other club in the circuit has de veloped to such a degree the difficult art of kicking away ball games. When the Quakers bowed to the Cardinals at St. IjouIs yeBterday. 6 to 4, it marked their twelfth consecutive defeat, eight of them, Including the last three, by one run. Old Grover Cleveland Alexander stood the Phils on their heads for eight Innings In yesterday's battle, allowing only one hit in that time. But the Quakers knocked the veteran out of the box tin the ninth Inning with, a four-run rally that just failed to tie the score. Andy High, Oy Williams and George Harper hit home runs, It being the latter's thirteenth of the season. Six games to the rear of the lead ers, the New York Giants moved Into second place by taking over the Chi cago Cuba, 4 to 3. The clan McGraw scored three runs in the last two In nings when Pat Mnlone, former Am erican association strike-out king, weakened. Red Lucas made the Braves jump through hoops all afternoon as the Cincinnati Reds evened the series, 4 to 8, and moved to within a game of the third-place Cubs. The Pittsburgh Pirates took It on the chin again at the hands of the Brooklyn Dodgers. 8 to 7. In a wild. froe-hittlng game. Six pitchers saw service and only Watson (Jiam, tne third and last Kobtn twirler, was effective. The Philadelphia Ahtletlcs may not be able to make uiucn or an inipres' nl on on the lead the New York Yan kees have amassed in the American league but at least they've demon strated their ability to stave off the bid of any rival club for second flace. The third place Mt, ouis Irowns came to Philadelphia on Thursday within striking distance of the runner-up post but the A beat them In both ends of a-double-header with Walberg and Rommel pitching gilt edged ball. George Earnshaw took his turn yesterdny, allowed the Browns three scattered singles and fanned ten men as the A'a made It three In a row, 4 to 0. Wniihinrtnn rnllied In the late In nings to defent Detroit, 7 tn 4. After Sorrell, starring Tiger hurler, had forced home the tying runs in the fifth, the Senators pounded Elam Van Gilder Sorrell's would-be res cuer, for the winning runs in the sixth and seventh.
