There spoke the iiiloimnatiiule Fpirit of hnmnu kind. It is a worthy characteristic, none tho loss so hoeimse it is not confined to any city or any land San Francisco manifcKted it lifter Inn grout earthquake of lWfi. Tokio and the other cities of .Japan devastated bv the i'iirtliiinike of l'X'.'S manifested it. NnmerouH American citicn which have hud great fires have manifested it. Tim mere incident of disaster does not stop per manently tho progress of cities. Ifntlier it stimulates them to increased efforts and ultimately to enlarged achievement. And so, like Mier cities cimilarly stricken, Santa Harlmra nays to the vorld: "We will rebuild." U is altogether probable, tu..t a finer mid greater Santa JJarhara will nriso on the ruins of the old. Shall We Follow Tennessee? SO THEY arc going to try (o give Oregon a Mute re ligion by initiative enactment. And our Mule re ligion, if tho movement sucecds, is to lie fundamentalist. AVo nro to take our leadership from Tennessee, where they dip and snuff, cat clay and shoot from behind trees at officers who try to interfere with their mooushiniiig activities. We are to have a law, if tho proponents of tho hill can persuade a majority of us to vote for it, 'Iwhich will ho modeled on the Tennessee act under which Scopes is to bo tried. Scopes is charged by in dictment under this law with .having taught "certain theories that deny tho divine creation of man as taught in tho ISible." Tho proponents of this law are to present a bill to provide for its enactment before tho voters of Oregon, California and Washington before their legislatures meet, according to tho news that comes down to us in tho dispatches. Tho measure, so the announcement says, will he voted on in all three stall's in Willi. Hev. Hilly Sunday will open the campaign for the measure at his revival to bo hold in l'ortlund next September. (To the Editor) I've been nosing around our iittlA eitv on r to find that Here find there are marks of the "hick" town not yet obliterated not no much in its setting but rather as to peraona, and wondering why 'twas so. I sat myself down on one of the park benches and proceeded to indulge in flights of fancy. The good folks near me on benches or lying on the cool earth, were try ing to obtain relief from the sun's hot rays, and hot winds that blew through the open places, by mopping their per spiring faces, and were glad . and thankful for this restful spot. .My fancy carried me on, and 2 heard the dripping of a cool fountain, a memorinl donated by some public spirited individual or progressive club. Oak street had been closed between Seventh and Kighth avenues, and in I the center was placed this magnifi cent fountain, jlyriads of birds came to drink of its cool waters, and flew away, returning soon with the melo dies of sweet voiced songsters of the woods. Tired men and women came to rest and enjoy a respite from hard days of lubor. Youth and maiden told again the "sweetest story ever told" and little children basked on the lawn under the shadows of the trees, and every one who came gathered up the refuse, that it might not be left to upoil the beauty of the purk. Here and there were easy chairs' and open swings, which offered repose nnd not the rollicking, riotous noise of a play ground. Truly it was an Eden, a source of pride to every citizen of Eugene and Lane county, but I : awoke. It was only a dream dream ed there under the trees. I had read that a children's park will take the place of my fanciful fountain. I love little children, ami grownups too, but the two do not mix. Hummer and winter arc two distinct seasons. Grownups need rest, children need action. Which shall it be? A dusty noisy park or n park for rest and beauty? There are other acres near, covered with shady trees, that could be used for the children in which to play, and it is n dire need, but such a play ground would surely mar the beautv "f our city's most attractive feature. It worries me, nnd then my thoughts rumble on, back to the real cause of my distrestied Ktnto of mind, viz., the-signs of a "hick" town, prominent today. I have seen the word "secretary" treated as if behind it there rested no solemn obligation. Secretaries are employed here and elsewhere. The root word of "secretary" is "secret." The secretary who true to the word is one who never violates the confi dence in office, but how large the percent where the secretary hurries home to tell her husband and friends the things of office thnt should never be revealed. Wives too, learn to know their neighbors business because the hus band is not a he-man but a gossiping "sissy." I know people who refrain from depositing their money jn the bank, because they know that by the way of secretary and employes, his imancini status will be known. IVrhups ihe heat has affected my mind today, but some pen-folks would ! call it nn inspiration, but be what it j may, I hand myself a bouquet and i call my "logic good."
