The Oakridgi! t'hiimber of commerce now has n membership of 50 progres sive business men, and a membership drive, to he staged soon, is expected to swell the number to 75. A total , of nearly 50 businesses are now flourishing in the city, it is pointed out. The community has been platted, streets named, and a large square set off as a city park. It has all the elements of regular city, and is expected to take its place with tho leading metropolises of Lane county ; as soon as It is incorporated. The city also boasts an up-to-date school house and high .school, and nn attractive church. A fire sya tem, with a well trained volunteer fire crew, has been put into operation, nnd two stations, with 300 feet of large firo hose in each, established. Although many of the buildings in the thriving city are of the tempor ary "mushroom" type, these are rnp iiily being replaced by substantial, well Miilt structures. The new drug store, with the hotel above, is nearly . completed, and is already occupied. The theater, dance hnll, new hard ware store, and several other bu'ld ings are of the permanent type, and are built in nn attractive style. J. Kringle Motor Co., local Paige and Jewett distrib utors. The high point so far this year was reached the other day, according to Paige officials, when a stock Jewett touring was driven from Modesto, to the floor of the Yosemlte valley sealed in high gear. The feat was ac complished by W. A. Jones, Tnige Jewctt dealer in Modesto. About the same time, it is said, an other make of car covered this route and considerable ntir was made be cause only 3(1 gear changes were re quired. This car sells for three times the price of a Jewett. ! Modesto trade officials checked the Jewett before the start and sealed the differential and transmission gear cases. The car took the most difficult grades and the sharpest turns with ease and always had power to reserve. The seals were again inspected on ar rival at Yosemite. California motor authorities vouch for the statement that this Is the first time this trip has been made by any car in high gear. Two more notable hill-climbing vic tories are among Jewett's list of re cent achievements, the Paige com pany's president announces. On Dec oration Day one of the Jewett sp cials that won highest laurels last year showed the best time up a long and difficult hill at Port Jefferson, N. Y. Three Crack Teams To Meet on Field The three crack teams of Lane county, Oakridge, Springfield and the Southern Pacific team of Eugene, will clash at Oakridge during the big two day Fourth of July celebration, it in announced. FAT STEERS REM FOR BIG BARBECUE Huge chunks of beef, done to a turn, will be offered to everybody at Oakridge July 4 and 6, during the big celebration. A monster barbe cue, which means death and total ex tinction to ac least two steers, will take place both days, announces Dr. L. W. Peate, president of the "End of Steel" celebration association. Two steers, weighing a total of 1S00 pounds, have already been pur chased and are now being fattened for the slaughter, it Is stated. A complete force of six of the best cooks in Oakridge has been engaged to take care of the culinary work in volved, and they promise the most savory beef that haa ever been seen in the upper river country. "Don't be afraid to come around for all the meat you want," says "Doc," "for if we see that we have more than enough people for two steers, we can get a dozen more here in a hurry. The barbecue and big feed will take place in the center of the city, at the big city Bquare. Several trains a day, as often as there is a demand for them, will be run up the newly laid track beyond Railhead, and persons interested will be given a chance to inspect tho railroad com pany's work. Engineers will be on band to ex plain all the eccentricities of the construction of this great project, it is announced. The actual building of the railroad will culminate one of the greatest engineering feats ever seen in the west. On the portion of the project started 15 tunnels ere encountered between Oakridge and the summit of the mountains, near Odell lake. Here the greatest bore of all comes, when the road will cut directly under the highest point of the line. This tun nel will be the longest of all, 3360 fee, and will come out on the Bhore of one of tre greatest scenic attractions eJiewett Ldach.
